All things verbally demolishing...

"ALEX AND DERRICK"
By Reggie Tangan, Amboy Debonair

"Sniveling pipsqueak," Alex told me as we entered the MPH to watch Teatro Benito's production of "Jesus Christ, Superstar." All I know is that dreamy Don Bunye is going to play "Jesus." In some case my boyfriend, Alex didn't seem to faze out when he saw my ex-boyfriend Derrick enter the MPH as well.

"What is it about my exes that releases your inner bitch?" I asked.
"Seeing how your ex treated you before gives me gas."

"Whatever. We're here to watch something pleasant." though I was expecting an entourage of beautiful people come in the hall on a matching red carpet. But alas, it wasn't. Instead, it felt like a hall filled with stampeding bulls since this is a free show.

Alex, with his gentlemanly attitude gave me a seat near where the action is. As for Derrick, he took one of the rows at the other end of the stage, at that point of view we could visibly see Derrick during the play.

Anyways, back to the play. It was the sort of pumped-up modern version of the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical. Complete with cranky vocals taken from the video that the cast watched previously. Reality bites, the cast had to lip-synch the songs since the video showed the actors have powerful voices. Simply, they cannot sing the songs in the play.

But the production was to die for. Cool costumes from designers, oops, no there aren't, the cast simply put on their fave threads since this is a modern version. Not with togas and such, if they were it'd look like a soft porn show. But everything else is to die for.

The biggest shocker so far was the performance of the high priests. Look, Alex. They look like the guys who were auditioning for the Matrix Reloaded and subsequently rejected. As for Anthony, who played one of the high priests wore heavy black make-up and cranky black eye shadow. Grabe, he looked like a crying drag queen on steroids. But take me seriously my kiddies, these high priests and their enormously funny bass sound gave their best and was the most enjoyable part of the play.

Besides the great production and near perfect lip-synch, Don gave us a great performance as Jesus, and Kat as Mary Magdalene. That tells us, Jesus had a girlfriend, and this play gave us the idea that Jesus is entirely human. Anyway, I loved the play and so did Alex.

As we exited the hall, Alex took off ahead as he needed to go to the john. With that opportunity, my ex Derrick approached me and tried to woo me back.

"You know, it won't work on me again." I told him.
"I see, I get the picture that you're anti-Derrick missile launcher is on." He replies. As soon as he finished his sentence, I gave him a punch on the stomach. Hey, I am gay but I still have my masculinity in me.

"My dear, did you hurt yourself?" Alex ran down on me seeing me kick Derrick's behind.

"No, but it felt therapeutic." I told Alex as we looked down on Derrick still having convulsions on my punch.

"Come on, sweetie puns, we're late for dinner." He reminded me.
