RedWalk's Story I began researching survival techniques for a novel nearly two decades ago. It wasn't long before I discovered that pure survival really didn't require anything from our modern world as most books and manuals specify. The Australian's bush manuals were close but the best methods were those used by the Native Americans so I focused on them. Along the way the wonderful teachings of Native Elders brought a new understanding and direction to my life. It brought me closer to nature by allowing me to become part of it, and to see it through new eyes, animal eyes. At first I began simple weekend practice sessions. As the years went by, the time I spent in wilderness settings increased. At the age of 47, with legs still strong, I gave up my job, home and possessions and headed out to learn how to live off the land. This "cleansing" of material things was an important step and one I have never regretted. I truly know the difference between what I need and want. What I left behind wasn't needed. My experience includes many months in the Superstition Wilderness in Arizona and many more foraging the mountains of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. My methods were pure only in that I made what I needed from the land. When I found litter from hikers I would use it also if practical. I returned to "civilized" life in the fall of 1998. My legs are still carrying me fine and my heart aches to go back to the wilderness again. I hope to be able to teach my modern brothers and sisters how to enjoy nature more completely. Be that a hike up a mountain trail or a stroll in a city park. I often hear people ask each other "Where are the animals?" when I encounter them in the woods. It is these folks that this site is dedicated to. RedWalk |

If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected. Chief Seattle |
