About a year ago my seven-year-old daughter was diagnosed with UC.
She has been on SCD for six months. In the first three months, with
ups and downs, she had gained weight, felt better and was emotionally
and mentally more stable. For the last three month she has not been
doing well. There were a few good days, but mostly she has been sick
with more trips to the toilet, more blood, and loss of weight.
Last week we took advice from several on the SCD listserve and
eliminated all fruit, juice and yogurt temporarily. She went from ten
BMs a day with blood, to three a day with no blood the next day! It
was amazing. Unfortunately that lasted for only two days with a
return of more blood and frequency. The same as before. She has had
the flu for the last two weeks.
We suspected since she was a baby that she had sensitivity to fruit
and sugar and would often get "apple diarrhea" even before UC. Now
she is eating such a limited diet (mostly meat, eggs, cheese and a
few squashes). I would love to expand the diet to more legals but
feel nervous.
Emily has not been on any meds. We'd love to heal her naturally if at
all possible. Can she take any supplements that would aid in healing
(she is taking the Freeda and Lyosan). Are meds a must?
What to do and how to get there? We feel discouraged, scared and like
the diet may not be working.
Thanks for your help!

Elaine's answer to John:
Please have your child tested for Clostridium difficile.
Also, my child also had a 3 month relapse which can be triggered by the flu
or some of the shots children are receiving.
Please update me on my questions so I can proceed intelligently.
One thing I would suggest just to help her over this hump is a bit of
prednisone with doctor's supervision. Often with the diet, a small amount
will get her over this relapse.
Also, salt water enemas twice a day: 1/2 tsp salt in a cup of warm water.
But get the Clostridium test as soon as you can.
CHELATON
But you brought up something interesting--chelation. We are starting to
naturally chelate my son's gut. We are using vitamin C and cilantro. We keep
a careful eye out on his carbs (legal) while doing so to keep the yeast at
bay.
I think he is so healed, that he is actually absorbing the cilantro and
vitamin C and antioxidants he gets via food. I don't think we could have
even attempted this prior to being on the diet for over a year. We are
seeing great results..
Best wishes,.
Jen.
Since SCD there has been much more spontaneous,
interactive conversation and play as well as an ability to attend. We are also chelating,
but we chelated for a year before going on SCD and it is only since SCD that
we've noticed the dramatic changes. I think SCD is helping chelate more
effectively.
Marisol.
[Marisol does the DAN protocol]
I have no experience with chelation and this is one
area in which I dare not get involved. There are many
who believe, based on allergists' advice, that the
basic problem is accumulation of toxic heavy metals.
I, personally, feel that (as in Alzheimer's with
aluminum) it is a result of faulty cellular metabolism
which is probably due to malabsorption of other
nutrients . These essential nutrients which are
probably not being absorbed would rid the cells of
anything that does not belong in the cells. But,
again, I know little more than that.
I studied the detoxification systems of the body
including the P-450 system of the liver (very
dependent on Vitamin C) but feel my information is
incomplete.

I totally agree with Elaine's view that the gut pathogens /malabsorption problem is destroying our children's ability to detoxify naturally.
The DAN doctors ,who are chelating ASD children, have found out that DMSA and ALA increase the gut bugs. They also have found out that increased gut bugs impair detoxification. This information is explained in great detail in Dr Mc Candless' book"Children with Starving Brains".
The best help for chelation is to follow the SCD diet along with your favorite detoxification protocol .
Some parents are decideding to skip chelation and to just let the child detox naturally after he is healed by SCD.
