We had now made it through our first month of the tour. Robby and George had begun to see the tension that had formed between me and John. We tried to avoided each other and only talked when it was absolutely necessary. We arrived in New Orleans on the last night of Mardi Gras. None of us had ever been so we decided to stick around and see what it was like. People were in the clubs, people were in the bars, people were in the street, people were everywhere. During all the confusion we all got separated. Thinking that this maybe the only chance I might would ever have to go to Mardi Gras I decided not to waste my time looking for the guys. They were all big boys and could take care of themselves.
I started walking through the streets admiring all the costumes the people had on when a sprinkler went off. I along with several other people were soaked. I headed back to where had left the van to change. Once there, I climbed in and was rummaging around through all of our bags. I finally found a pair shorts and a tee shirt to put on. I was closing the door to the van when a mysterious figure started talking to me, "Have you ever been to Mardi Gras before?"
Trying to see through the darkness I said, "No, I havent."
He came closer so I could see his face. The van was parked on one of the side roads. It was then, that I noticed we were alone. Becoming nervous I smiled and said, "Well I guess I had better go find my friends."
"Mind if I help? I dont think its a good idea that you be wondering the streets of Mardi Gras alone," he said as we turned back in the direction of the crowds. "I didnt catch your name"
"Thats probably because I didnt tell you. Its Kayla."
"Kayla, thats a very pretty name."
"Thank you, but I really had no choice in deciding"
He laughed at that, "Well, me neither. Im Kurt."
As we were walking past several of the bars I stopped, listening to the music. Kurt stopped too and asked, "Is something wrong?"
Following the sound of the voice, I said, "No, I just think that I have found my friends." Sure enough there they all were on stage singing. They looked like they had already had a little something to drink.
"Those are your friends?" Kurt said watching them run around on stage.
"Yep"
We sat down at a table and not long after the guys came over to join us. I introduced the guys to Kurt and vice versa. We explained that they were in a band and I was there manager. After some more small talk Kurt asked me to dance.
"He seems nice. You think she likes him?" Robby said to John after George had gone off to talk to a girl at the bar.
"How the hell should I know what that girl is thinking," John snapped.
"Man, what happened between you two. For a while there you were getting along. How did you manage to piss her off this time." Robby said
"What makes you so sure it was me that did something."
"Because I know you. So come on tell me, Ive been quiet about it for weeks now."
"I think she may have gotten angry when I sort of called her a whore," John said quietly.
"You called her a whore? Why?" Robby asked becoming infuriated with his best friend.
"Robby, you should have seen her. She was wet and had nothing on but a towel"
"So that gave you the right to call her a whore?"
Resenting the fact that Robby, his best friend, was taking Kaylas side, he said, "Rob, it wasnt that she was just in a towel. She was flirting with me too."
"So, you dont think thats what youre doing with her."
Irritated John said, "I guess....but man she was playing dirty. I am a man after all, and I can only take so much."
"Did you guys...um...um...."
"No, George interrupted us before anything happened. Thank goodness for small miracles right."
"I guess"
Looking at Rooby John said, "Whats that suppose to mean."
Shrugging his shoulders Robby said, "Maybe if you two would just do it, and get it out of your system then you wouldnt have to fight all the time."
"I dont need any advice on how to maintain my sex life. And there is no way that I want that girl, who's probably been with God only know how many guys, in my bed."
John, take a look at that girl over there," Robby said pointing to where Kurt and Kayla were sitting at the bar. "Now you tell me that there is absolutely no way that you wouldnt want her in your bed. "
John looked over and then back at Robby, John said, "After sleeping with you and George for the past 6 weeks any woman would look nice."
"Man, if you believe that then youre a bigger fool than I thought," Robby said. "Do you know how many men would love to be in your place right now. All you have to do is just get along with her."
"That is not as easy as you make it sound," John said.. |

The fun of Mardi Gras was soon forgotten. We had ten days before the tour was finished and we could head to California. Except for the scuffles between myself and John our trip had been pretty smooth until now. The club the guys were suppose to have played in was closed due to a death in the family, and we were running low on money. The next concert wasn't for 2 days so we had to figure out a way to earn some fast cash. George was good a pool so he bet some guys we met in a pool hall $100. Thank God he won, but $100 wasn't going to be enough for gas, food and a motel. I was sitting at the bar of the pool hall talking to the bar tender. "Are you sure you wouldn't like to hear some really good music?"
"Lady, I'm sure those boys are really great, but this just isn't that kind of place," he told me. He turned around to say something to the owner of the club that had just approached. In a few minutes they were both coming back over to me.
"My bar tender tells me that you need to make some money," the owner said.
Becoming hopeful I said, "Yes sir, we do. Those boys are really good, and I'm sure..." but before I could finish he cut me off.
"Yes, I'm sure they are very talented but as my bar tender said, this isn't that kind of place."
"But I thought you had a way for us to earn some money?" I said.
"I do, just not singing," he said.
"Well then how?"
"Can you dance?" he said smiling smugly.
His meaning just seemed to hit me, "You want me to strip?" I said disbelieving.
"Look, you're a pretty girl, and a fresh face. We need some new blood around here to liven things up; and you look like just the girl to do that. Nobody is going to touch you, they can just look at you," he said trying to make it sound not as bad as it was. "It's completely your choice, darling, but if you do it I will pay you $500 plus split all the tips."
Knowing how much we needed the money I said, "I'll do it."
"Good, let me set things up and I will meet you back behind that curtain when your ready," he said walking away.
I walked over to where the guys were sitting and Robby looked up asking, "Were you able to find us a way to earn some money?"
"Yeah, I did, but this time I'm going to be the bread winner for tonight," I said nervously looking around to see that there club was only about half full.
"I don't think I understand," George said.
"Oh, you will. I will be back in a few minutes," I said stepping away from the table.
Robby reached out and grabbed my hand, "You aren't going to do anything you'll regret are you? We don't need the money that bad."
"No, I won't regret it, but it might make it a little easier on me if you guys would wait for me outside."
"Wait for you outside...Why?" robby asked, confused.
"Oh, never mind, just remember everything I do, I do it because I believe in you guys one hundred percent" I said walking toward the curtain where the owner was.
"Kayla, what are you talking about?" Robby said as he sat back down with George and John. "I think that girl may be up to something" .
Grabbing John's attention he said, "Like what?"
"I have no idea," Robby said shaking his head.
The music started to play and the owner introduced me as heaven on a harley. I heard the beginnings of the song I had chosen, "Leader of the Pack," took a deep breath and stepped out onto the stage.
"Uh....guy I think I may know what Kayla had up her sleeve, and in a few minutes I have a feeling so will everyone else in the room," George said looking toward the stage.
"George, what are you talking about?" John said turning to look in the direction of George's gaze.
All three of their jaws dropped instantly to the floor. For a long time none of them could say anything. They all just sat there watching in embarrassment as I seductively danced around for all the drooling men in the club. Finally John said, "What the hell is she thinking?"
George, who had now become amused, said, "Well it looks like she had another talent we didn't know about," which got a laugh from Robby and a sneer from John.
Finally the song was over, I grabbed my clothes and headed back behind the curtain. When I came out I had men saying how much they had enjoyed my routine, and some even asking for a private dance. I walked to the guys, who were all blushing and said, "Well, how did I do?"
Robby jumped in saying, "I was extremely impressed. Where did you learn to do that?"
Now I started to blush, "I don't know, but I can understand why women do it. You get a powerful rush when your up there; after you forget the fact that you don't have any clothes on," I said laughing.
"I think this may be a good time for us to leave," Robby said noticing all the men that were starring. "I thank you for doing that for us, Kayla. I know we needed the money, but please don't do that again," Robby told me as we climbed in the van.
"I won't make any promises." I said playfully.
We finally found a motel that had a vacant room. John hadn't said anything to me since he watched my performance earlier but he had been giving me dirty looks. It was our night to share a bed together, and as always, we tried to sleep as far away from the other a possible.
I laid in the bed that night for the longest time but I could seem to go to sleep. Not wanting to wake John with my tossing and turning, I got out of the bed and stepped outside. It wasn't very hot, but it wasn't too cool either. It seemed right pleasant, before I had company. "Bad dream?" John said as he joined me outside.
"No, I just can't sleep. You?"
"I felt you get up, just wanted to make sure everything was all right."
Surprised by his honesty I said, "I got up so that I wouldn't wake you."
"I wasn't sleeping anyway. Kept seeing images of you on that stage"
"Really?" I said now looking into his eyes.
His face and eyes instantly hardened "Not everyday you get to see a whore in action without paying for her," he said maliciously.
Know that the short truce was completely forgotten, I said, "Why do you have to do that?"
"Do what?"
"Things were going so nicely between us. I thought maybe I had misjudged you, but you really are just a prick," I said opening the door to our room.
It was a long time before I heard John come back inside, and an even longer time before he came back to bed. Pretending to be asleep when John finally did get back into the bed, he leaned close and whispered ever so softly, "I'm sorry" then moved back to his side of the bed. Tears form in my eyes and I didn't know why. Sleep didn't come for me until much later that night. |

I woke up to find John pressed against my back, with his arm thrown across my stomach. My initial thought was to push him away, but thought better of it instead. It wasn't unpleasant laying so close to John, it was his breath on that I could feel on my neck that was beginning to unnerve me. Moving ever so carefully onto my back so I could see what he looked like asleep. He made very little noise when he slept. I pushed back a lock of his hair that had fallen over his eyes. He looked so peaceful lying there asleep like a little boy. Then the thoughts of what he had called me earlier came back to me and I turned my head away from him. The sun had not yet come up so I could barely make out the two lumps in the other bed that were Robby and George.
I sensed a changing in John's breathing and felt his arm tighten around me. I turned my head to see him and found that he was starring back. When I started to break the silence he shook his head and mouthed, 'Don't.' We didn't say anything just laid there looking into each other's eyes.
All too soon the spell was broken. We heard Robby rustling around in the bed. I felt John's body stiffen before he turned away to get out of bed. I still remained in the bed trying to put my thought together over what had just happened and why I felt this enormous loss when John moved away from me.
I finally dragged myself from the bed. The moment I sat up I got nauseous. I ran to the bathroom and started throwing up. I heard Robby ask me if I was all right but I didn't have time to answer. I walked out of the bathroom and Robby came over to me, "Are you all right?" he asked concerned.
"Yeah, I don't know where that came from. It just sort of hit me all of the sudden"
"Do you think it was something you ate?" Robby asked.
"Probably," I answered.
George was now sitting on the edge of the bed across from me, said, "Kayla, I don't want to step out of line or anything, but is there anyway you're pregnant?"
Immediately Robby's eye moved to John. He had been leaning against the door listening as everyone fussed over me. When he saw the contempt in Robby's eyes he instantly said nastily, "Hey man I haven't touched her. If the girl is knocked up it ain't by me."
Returning the vicious look John sent my way, I said, "Guys, thanks for the concern, but I'm not pregnant."
"Can you be positive about that?" Robby asked
"It only takes one time, you know," George said reminded me.
"I maybe from a small town, but it's not that small. I know it only takes one time, but I also know that you have to be sexually active too." I said trying to close the subject.
Finally interested John said, "You can't tell me that you have never had sex."
"I didn't say that I haven't. I said that I haven't been sexually active lately," I said through clenched teeth. "Besides, I can't have children anyway," I said almost silently.
With a look of pain Robby said, "Kayla, we didn't mean to..."
"No, it's ok. You guys couldn't have possibly known. I've have dealt with it." Standing up and putting one arm around Robby and one arm around George I said, "Besides, what do I need children for when God has given me you guys."
Robby and George laughed and we all had a group hug, except for John who was walking outside. Robby and George followed him so I could get dressed. I felt better now. I guess I will just chalk it up to life on the road, but it was soon going to come to an end. We only have 3 more concert dates before going to California. I could survive anything until then. Suddenly the thought of John and popped into my head. I was going to have to stay away from him if for no other reason than for my sanity. One minute I think we can put our differences behind us and be friends and the next he is as cold as ice. I couldn't figure him out, but he was driving me crazy. Not wanting to think about John anymore, I pushed him to the back of my mind and started getting dressed. |
