John Joseph Theodore Rzeznik was born December 5, 1965. He grew up with four older sisters in Buffalo, New York. By age 15 he was an orphan trying to make a living on his own. After graduating from high school, John had dreams of becoming a plumber. After digging a ditch for a day, he changed his mind and decided to enroll in college.
It was at Buffalo State that John met Robby Takac. John was in a band, the Beaumonts, with Robby's cousin. When the Beaumonts split, John and Robby decided to form their own band. they enlisted an old classmate of Robby's, George Tutuska, and formed the Goo Goo Dolls.
