David Lee Labansat The man known as "Papa Dave"
David Lee Labansat was born on the 23 of January 1905 in an unknown place in Mexico. He was one of two known children, the other a sister named Antoinette. His father was Mr. Labansat (unknown given name), and his mother, Miss Odinot, (unknown given name). There is not much known about David Labansat by this author, but as far as I am concerned he is my grandfather.
On an unknown date and place David Married Betty (unknown maiden name). It is unknown if her birth name was Betty or Bertha, however she has a "grandchild" named after her Bertha Elizabeth Dulaney
For some reason (unknown to me) David and his wife Betty could not have children.
The story passed down to me is a sketchy and sad one. As I understand it Robert Andrew Dulaney Sr had a bad childhood and was very neglected by his parents. When Robert was a child he was caught stealing a candy bar from a store that David Labansat owned in Inglewood, California. Instead of causing Robert any more problems, David employed Robert and the two eventually became very close. David and Betty "adopted" Robert, (though not legally), as their own. Even though the "adoption" was not a legal one, David and Betty took care of Robert and his family and treated them as any parent or grandparent would. "Papa Dave" is not in the gene pool of the Dulaney's, yet he and "Grandma Betty" live in the Dulaney's hearts as their REAL grandparents. David Labansat is known to his "grandchildren" as "Pappa Dave", a name given to him by Rebbecca Dulaney as a small child, as she could not pronounce the word Grandpa. In addition, Robert Andrew Dulaney Sr's second son David Lee Dulaney, is name after "Papa Dave".
David Labansat took care of Robert helping him and his family by renting them a place to live on a few occasions. The address at 9604 Ocean Gate in Inglewood, California, was owned by David. Sometime in the mid 1950's David and Robert went into the service station business together. They co-owned the D and L Gas Station once located near 1007 S Prairie Avenue, across the street from gate 7 of the Hollywood (horse) Race Track. Neither the race track, the gas station, nor the house is there any more. In addition, David also owned what was known as "The "Ranch" at 29625 Louis Avenue; Located in Forest Park, Canyon Country, California, USA, where the Dulaney's lived for many years.
David died in Inglewood California on December 11 1982 while living at the Ocean Gate address. The location of David's remains are unknown.
David Social Security Number was 551-30-8399
