It was a requirement for going through chief petty officer initiation.  In some ways, it even represented the whole grueling process; an uphill climb where many times you just want to say to hell with it and climb back down to the comfort of the air-conditioned bus.  But once you complete it, you secretly curse yourself for doubting you could make it and revel in the joy of a job well done.

That was Fuji-san.  And the CPO selectees made it happen.
