I found this ring in a city park next to a basketball court in Lemont, Illinois. It was 2 to 3 inches deep and it registered as a zinc penny, around a 57 on my VDI. I had dug quite a few zincs and almost didn't dig it. It was trashy so I was using a 5" excelerator coil and my MXT detector.

Since it was an Illinois State Championship Football Ring I was sure I wanted to return the ring. These rings are made for the winning team and can't be bought. I figured the owner couldn't wait to get it back. There couldn't be more than about 50 in the world. The owners name was in the ring as well as his playing number. First I checked the phone book using the guys last name. Each person I called said the same thing, they didn't know the young man. This was strange since I live in the same town as the high school.

Well I decided to try the school. They would not give me his telephone number but said they would have the owner call me. The next day I got a call from the young man's father. He began asking me questions. When did I find it? Where did I find it? Where in the park did I find it. I finally said,"look I have your son's ring, I don't want anything, all I want is to return it." I gave him all the information and he said he knew where I lived. He asked if I would be home and said he would come and get it. It's been a year and a half and the ring still sits on my shelf.

I wrote a short story and submitted it to Whites. For my efforts they sent me a $200.00 certificate for my permission to publish the story. I redeemed the certificate for a 6 X 10 DD coil, a lower rod to mount the coil, and a digging tool.
