| When
working with a client on a
new home,
we make a list of priorities together, describe the required
spaces, and establish a budget range, to arrive at creative,
cost-conscious design. Special attention is paid to site conditions
including access to the site, solar orientation, unique views
on the property, existing plantings and the surrounding context.
The requirements for each space are developed with the client.
This detailed information helps us design the optimum size for
each room. Traffic flow and furniture arrangement are studied
at an early stage to determine door and window placement.

The
compact design of this 1850 sq. ft. cottage
by the river uses a metal roof, simple
form and large porches, typical of the
vernacular architecture of this area.
Careful planning keeps the small house
spacious and accommodates 8-10 people.
