Hello,
Came back from Edinburgh last night.Had the most amazing 3 days.
Here is a full report !
Friday noon I met up with Juanen, Juan, Lorenzo and Jesus, all spanish guys in the Uni. Then we took a cab and went to a Car Hire service called Arnold Clark. Juanen had already booked a blue Nissan Almera the day before. Anybody with a valid license and over 17 is allowed to drive a hired car, but he has to be accompanied by a valid license holder above 22, Juanen is 23 and Juan, Lorenzo and Jesus are 22. So actually I am allowed to drive, but Juanen drove throughout.
Anyway, so we left Sheffield at around 1:00 pm and drove straight into the M1 (M=motorway). Juanen took some time to adjust to the Right Hand Drive but he soon got accustomed to it. I was sitting in the front and giving directions, I had a map of course. Driving on the motorway must be so much fun ! But I never got a chance of course.
We soon reached, Leeds , then we went on to Darlington, Durham, Newcastle. The england-scotland border is only 1 hour away from Newcastle. All along the way the Countryside was so beautiful , we got out 2-3 times to take pictures, but it was SO cold .. but it was really beautiful, the really FAT sheep grazing in the middle of nowhere, there was absolutely nothing for miles apart from the motorway. But this just the begining, as we approached the border, the hues changed from green to sort of purple and dark brown , we were almost in Scotland !
By the time we reached the border it was around 6:00 and pitch dark , the sun sets at around 3:45 pm nowadays ! So we could not see much of the Scottish countryside. Anyway by 7:00 we were in Edinburgh, or E-dhin-burrr-aah as the Scots say it. I have completely fallen in love with the Scotish Accent.. they speak in a tune which is really nice to hear. The English hate the Schottish (thats how they spelt it spelt till 120 years ago, but they still pronounce it that way ).
Juanen had already booked a B&B (Bed and Breakfast) at 20 a night. A scottish couple run the place, nice place. Anyway, after resting for a while we went off to the city centre ( like Downtown in the US, they say City Centre in the UK ) .. the shops in Edinburgh are open till 11:00 which is really strange, because elsewhere in UK they close by 5:00 or 6:00 , but Edinburgh is such a tourist place !
The main street in Edinburgh ,Princess street is a great place. The whole of the City is like a museum, with cobblestone roads, Statues everywhere, Museums, Castles, really breathtaking architecture all around the city, every single building is like VT station in bombay.
We came back to our B&B at around 12:30, really tired. Had a nice sound sleep. Got up for breakfast at around 9:00, Isabelle and Henry the scottish couple, told me that there is a tradional Vegetarian Scottish Breakfast called Hagas, so i tried that, it was nice actually. Isabelle bought us tickets for the Open Bus Edinburgh Tour Bus ticket, it was a sunny morning so we sat on the open top of the Bus. It was great, ther were poeple were all over the world, on the bus. The atmosphere was great, with many entertainers playing the Scottish Bagpipe in Kilts ! We then went to the Edinburgh Castle, the view from the caslte is unbelievable, we spent almost the whole of the day at the castle. There was this dressed exactly like Mel Gibson in braveheart in the castle, it was really funny, he kept shouting, 'You can take our lives, but not our freedom'.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully, so after a really wonderful and satisfying day, we went off to sleep. The next morning we got up a bit late, went to the Cathedral, and then to the BEACH ! I finally saw the sea after 2 months ! The water was REALLY COLD ! Then it was time to leave for Sheffield.
The return journey was better because we could see the beautiful Scottish Countryside this time, the sun set as we approached Manchester, and finally we were back in unhistoric, boring Sheffield.
Throughout the trip, I had lots of fun talking Spanish, unlike, the English, the Spanish guys are very outgoing and friendly. I have learnt quite a bit of spanish and I think I can converse quite well in Spanish now.
Thats it then,
