| How to get your kid to be cool without really trying, or why Xcylur is so often the most popular kid in the room. Actually that't not entirely fair. Xcylur is popular with adults. With other kids, he holds his own, but adult dig him more. I was the same way as a kid so I wonder if some of it is just precociousness. I think it's because like me, Xcylur spends more time with adults than kids. He prefers adult company to kid company. He'd rather be with the grown-ups and try to do grown up things. He plays grown up computer games, he sings the grown-ups songs as much as the Backstreet boyz or Brittany Spears. So mostly it's immersion. In a lot of ways he's indoctrinated to a culture different than that other children are enjoying. He also has parents that want to spend their time with him. Mom and Dad like to play with the kids, they like to do things with Xcylur and his friends. They like to talk to the kids, to listen to them and share with them. And his parents have some pretty cool friends who will then spend time talking to Xcylur as well. How many kids can call somebody "Esphat the Hut," and not be insulting, but instead get a blaster rifle out of the deal? How many kids can go and get a stick to beat their buddies with and it be endorsed by Mom and Dad. How many kids have parents who will change their TV show to Cartoons because the kids want to watch the new Power Puff girls episode? So Xcylur is cool largely because his folks are cool? Well sure that's part of it. But it's being part of the family, all of us, and our friends that makes him and the rest of us what we are. |
