Cartoon Network, Friend or FOE????
Well actually, more huge waste of time and random memory or great way to keep the kids entertained. Xcylur watches a lot of CN. So do I, since I tend to be with him a lot of the time. He watches it at daycare too, and he watches cartoons, though not always CN at Grandpa Jerry's before school in the mornings.
But...
He's not doing too hot in school. His teacher says she thinks it's just because he won't listen, more to the point won't focus. He's slow about getting things done, and wants to bounce from fun thing to fun thing.
Is it because cartoons have created an attention span that makes a gnat look like a great thinker?
We read with him each night now, and Dad asks him throughout the story if he's listening, and what have we been reading about. It's helping, but only so much. Xcylur can tell me what happened on Dragon Ball Z, but not what he did in school.
In defense of CN, it's a great way to keep kiddies occupied. They're staring at the tube, they're not wrecking the house. And they can watch TV while Mom and Dad sleep in on the weekend, or while dinner's being prepared, whatever.
But is my kid watching too much? He's the kind of guy who turns on the TV first thing in the door. He'd rather watch cartoons and play with action figures than go outside.
Will his childhood memories be of what happened on Gundam Wing, rather than what he did? Sure we do things, go out on the weekend to pick apples, or go to a convention or hike in the woods, or just wander around the zoo or museum. We go to Goodwill. We play in the park.
We also sit in front of the TV.
Maybe I'll ask Xcylur what he thinks. |
