There are a lot of similarities between weirdo groups. Most of the goths I know game, many of the gamers are into sci-fi, lots of the SCA folks dig computer games, there's common bonds if you look.
So I keep my eyes peeled for other gaming, goth, SCA, Sci-Fi and S&M phreaks that are also moms and dads. I'll admit, I look more for couples than singles, but I look for any parents that can share my interests and hopefully, my issues. How do you explain the black lipstick to the kindergarten teacher. Why does your kid use terms like "gamer, obfuscate, pell, protoss,?" Why does your kid know all the words to "Barret's Privateers?" But even when I find other weirdo mom and dads, it's not a promise that we'll click.
For me, the biggest problem is that being a parent is my most important aspect. Being a gamer, a HR person, even a wife, none of those mean as much to me as being a mom. My responsibility to, and fandom of, my kid outweigh all the other things I do tenfold. Not all parents are like that. For some people being a parent is a job that they don't enjoy, or at least don't enjoy all the time.
Not that my kid or I am perfect. I just decided that making Xcylur a priority was my devotion to the future. If I put my efforts to giving Xcylur a basis that helps him to be a caring, intelligent, funny and compassionate person, I'm helping save the world. If I put my efforts to giving Xcylur that focus, it has to become my focus as well.
And that is so much my focus. I'm in a life where I know and deal with a lot of different people. Some I prefer to others. Some are more pleasant or kind or enjoyable than others. But in the end, no matter what others are and do, my life needs to be about the way I live it, not what's done to me. If I can teach Xcylur that as well, he'll be the kind of person others value and respect, because he'll respect and value others.
