Animal Life Animal life can be discovered in North and Northwestern Africa, including the famous Sahara desert, and Ethiopian area. The North and Northwestern zones particularly contain sheep, goats, camels and horses but quite possibly Barbary sheep African red deer and ibex remain native to coastal parts in the North. Animals in the Sahara like hares, gazelles and leaping rodents are specialized to survive in hot areas where water is scarce and food is limited. A variety of birds and rare creatures form habitats in the Ethiopian zone and various grassland or woodland areas are homes for species of deer, zebra, antelope, giraffe, buffalo, baboons, rhinoceros and the huge African elephant. African rainforests are inhabited most commonly by gorillas, monkeys, flying squirrels, lemurs and bats. Most birds like the guinea fowl, water birds, pelicans, goliath herons, flamingos, storks, and egrets form in large numbers and belong to the Eurasian group. Reptiles, including lizards, crocodiles and tortoises are also in the Eurasian region. Despite this, many dangerous and indeed venomous snakes like the mamba live in the Ethiopian zone, along with constricting snakes and pythons, which are mainly found in Western Africa. There are also many destructive and rather painful insects in Africa, including a whole group of mosquitoes, driver ants, termites, locusts and tsetse flies. Below are examples of the different wildlife found in Africa.
