Over The Rainbow

It had been raining so Dove, a bright, sensitive 15 year old, had stayed inside all morning, which had added to her boredom. And now finally, at 3 o'clock, the rain was beginning to ease off. She sighed dramatically and continued to gaze out of the window across the verdant land that surrounded her house.

After 30 minutes more an alluring rainbow had replaced the rain. So Dove decided to set off in the direction of the rainbow and see how long she could follow it for, something she hadn't done since she was a child. She quickly ran a brush through her uncontrolablle hair and clipped it up before leaving the safety of her house. Normally she would have lost interest in following the rainbow shortly after setting off on her trek, but it seemed to grow closer, instead of moving further away like it usually did.

At one point Dove was directly under the rainbow, once she realized this she gasped in surprise and ran in the direction of the end, wondering if another surprise awaited her. Her ashen flares scuffed against the adamantine terrian, and her hair whipped about her head.

Once she reached the end of the rainbow she saw a cocoon... oh how soft it was! After caressing the cocoon she felt the rainbow, it felt different... one minute it was hot the next it was cold, one minute it was soft the next it was rough. Then she realized each colour felt different. It was... energy. Unsure of what to do with the cocoon Dove decided to see what was at the other end of the rainbow, so she began to sprint towards it.

When she got to the other end her breathing was ragged and beads of sweat covered her forehead, she flopped down onto the ground and sighed. Then something caught her eye, as she looked towards where she thought the light had come from she saw it again. She clambered to her feet and wiped the seat of her trousers. She looked in the direction of the light and saw gems and other items, tons of them. She ran over and held a jewel up, how beautiful it was! and the rest were just as exquisite. Amoung the jewels was a slip of paper.

Dove picked up the slip of old, torn paper and unfolded it. It was titled 'Egyptis', and it read:

The Egyptis come from a realm called Zekira, they are a sacred beast and to receive one is a great honour. They have magical abilities and are of great interest. Egyptis look like foxes, they are two toned, grow 5 tails and 4 wings.

The rest had been ripped off, Dove wondered why anyone would want to rip the rest of it off, but it didn't really matter. She tucked the slip of paper into her pocket before stuffing the jewels in as well. She looked around quickly once again making sure there was nothing she'd missed before heading back towards where she'd found the cocoon.

But the rainbow was fading fast! Dove began to run, faster than she'd ever ran before, but it was no good, the rainbow had vanished and she was lost. Flustered and frustrated Dove continued to search for the cocoon. But it was no use, she would never find it without the rainbow.

Then it began to rain. 'Great this is all I need,' thought Dove who began searching for shelter right away. The rain became hail and Dove still hadn't found shelter. She was unable to see so she eventually tripped over something, she cursed as she fell. She thought it was a log but when she felt it... it wasn't... it was the cocoon!!! She let out a joyous scream and picked the cocoon, then she realized it wasn't raining... there was like an invisible shield protecting her and the cocoon... no... it was the rainbow! She could see it shimmer slightly, how amazing! She put the cocoon, which she knew contained an Egyptis, back down. How soft the grass under the rainbow was... and wait... no it couldn't be... could it? Yes! the grass was the colour of the rainbow along with everything else under the rainbow. But she could only see it change colour when she looked very closely, the rest of the time everything was normal. She sat down beside the cocoon and waited for the rain to stop.

The rain eventually ceased and Dove stood up looked at her watch, it was 7 pm already and she'd missed diner which wouldn't make her mom to happy, but it was still light. Yet Dove was too estatic to care about missing diner, her own cocoon! oh how she hoped it would hatch, she would love it to bits and visit it every day. She took out the jewels in her pocket and laid them beside the cocoon, they were her gift to him/her.

10 minutes later Dove kissed the cocoon goodbye and set off in the direction of her house. She would visit her cocoon again tomorrow and bring some toys with her....

Tomorrow came and went, Dove returned to tend to the cocoon and left some toys with it, she was growing more and more excited as time went by.

Finally, after days of waiting, her precious cocoon hatched, and oh how beautiful the creature that emerged was!! yet it was not a normal one, this one was.... different; even for a Egyptis; it was a rain type. Dove let out a gleeful cry and cuddled the little fox like creature, which in return emitted a soft yip and sniffed her. All 5 of it's tails began wagging after the little ritual it performed.

"Are you a girl or a boy huh?" Dove said grinning while she held the Egyptis up, she didn't expect a response.

'I, am a girl' she says via mental speech.

Dove gasped, "you can talk telepathically! that's amazing!"

'Yes and I can talk properly as well, but I don't like the idea of sharing my thoughts to anyone but my own kind and my bondmate... because that is what you are you know, my bondmate, the one who will look after me and love me.'

"Yes! Yes I do love you! and I'll never let anyone or anything hurt you! what shall we call you... I think something foreign..."

She smiles 'I'm sure anything you pick will be lovely.'

So they decided upon Orage Nauge, which is French for 'Storm Cloud'.

"Want something to eat Orage Nauge?" Dove said later on after they'd got to know each other a bit better.

Orage Nauge nodded and leapt up to catch the slice of turkey Dove threw her, thanking her once she'd finished. Then she padded over to her and say her head down up her leg, she had already played with the ball and jewels Dove had given her. Dove stroked her silky pelt, but she knew Orage Nauge would want to meet some other Egyptis.

Dove, eventaully had to leave her new found friend, who said she understood, yet Dove didn't want to leave. And she knew, that she would never want to be apart from her bondmate, so she said Orage Nauge could come home and stay in her room or in her back garden, but Orage Nauge declined, so Dove had to go home alone.

Every day Dove returned to see Orage Nuage, and eventually she believed that Orage Nauge really did like to be alone for a while, which Orage Nauge confirmed of course. And even when Dove was away, she was not... for Orage Nauge could communicate with her telepathically. And she did so mostly when Dove was at school, simply to save her soulmate from boredom.

One day while Dove was at school, it was just before lunch, Orage Nauge spoke to her.

'Dove!! come round straight after school! I want you to see something....'

'Ok I'll get there as soon as possible...' Dove replied, sensing Orage Nauge's excitement.

So straight after school, like she'd promised, Dove went to visit Orage Nauge, not quite sure what to expect. As it was, the surprise would be a huge one.

Once she'd got to the place where her and Orage Nauge always met she began to call out Orage Nauge's name, but when her companion did not reply she began to panic, was something wrong? She started to search for the Egyptis, then when something wet and cold touched her leg she shrieked in fright. When she turned around she saw her beautiful baby, who was infact now a teen. All of Orage Nauge's tails were wagging and she seemed to be smiling.

"Orage Nauge! why you've grown!" Dove laughed a little and grinned, "thanks for nearly giving me a heart attack as well."

  'Sorry Dove,' Orage Nauge responded.

"My you look so beautiful Rage," Rage was Orage Nauge's nickname, unlike some though, she liked her nickname. Dove was happy about Orage Nauge maturing, but deep down she was sad as well. Her little baby... almost an adult now... did that mean she wouldn't need Dove anymore?

'No!' Orage Nauge screamed, she was like a conscience, never going away, and something that only Dove could hear. 'I will ALWAYS need you Dove... without you my life would be like an empty shell...'

"I'm sorry Rage, I just let my imagination run wild sometimes, and you know I'm a worrier..."

Orage Nauge laughed, 'yeap your a worrier alright.'

Dove hugged Orage Nauge and kissed her silky head, and in response Orage Nauge licked her cheek, chasing away any fears Dove may have had.

'There was something I was wondering though Dove...'

"what?" Dove said in her mellow voice.

'Do you think I could meet some other Egyptans?'

"Why of course sweety," this nickname made Orage Nauge cringe, "oops... I mean Orage Nauge."

Orage Nauge leapt up in glee before releasing a series of yips, some low, some high. After Orage Nauge's little 'fit', Dove remembered she had an assignment to do; yet she would not leave Orage Nauge when she had just turned teen. So she started her assignment there and then; but Orage Nauge grew bored of just sitting and wandered off to find some berries and explore. She came to the bushes which bore berries and helped herself to them, before going off in search of some treasure to add to her horde.

She returned to where Dove had been empty handed, only Dove was no longer there! now it was Orage Nauge's turn to panic. She began to dart about barking madly, yet it was no good Dove had gone...

'Dove where are you?' Orage Nauge pleaded, but it was no good; Dove did not reply.

Tired and whimpering Orage Nauge collapsed in a pile inbetween two boulders. She lay her head on her paws and shut her eyes, trying to clear her mind, perhaps Dove had gone to get a book from the library or something.

When Orage Nauge awoke she felt someone's hands on her, she snarled and looked to see who the hands belonged to, it was Dove! Her tails snapped back and forth like whips, and her angry snarl changed to a yap of pleasure.

'Where were you?!' Orage Nauge demanded, 'I was so worried!'

"now you know how I felt!" Dove laughed and patted her friend's head. "Anyway, I see this as your birthday... and you can't have a birthday without PRESENTS!!"

Slowly Dove pulled out a beautiful Chalice and then a box with holes in.

'What's in the box?' asked Orage Nauge.

"Why don't you open it and see?"

Orage Nauge nodded and knocked the lid off with her nose and out flew a beautiful white dove. Yet the Dove did not fly away, instead it landed on Orage Nauge's head.

"I hope you like her... I remember seeing you with other animals, animals most dog like creatures would hunt, like rabbits and deer, and when they didn't run away from you, I figured you had well... a gift. And I thought she could keep you company when I'm not around. And I thought you could add the chalic to your collection."

Orage Nauge covered Dove's face in licks, 'thank you so much! I love them! but I wasn't expecting anything... you didn't have to go to such a lot of trouble.'

Dove laughed once more, "it was no trouble, really; I like to see you happy. And I know you weren't expecting anything! that's why it's called a surprise!" Dove said grinning. "Now, about you meeting other Egyptans, I'll see what I can do ok?"

Orage Nauge nodded and thanked Dove again for everything she had done for her before settling down.

  "Rage?!" Dove yelled,

  'What?'

"I've spoken to your sister, Astran's, bondmate and she's agreed to bring Astran over."

'Wow! I can't wait! I've waited so long to see another Egyptis and this will be my sister! thank you so much Dove, what would I do without you?' she thought smiling.

Dove laughed, "I don't know what would you; now she'll be meeting us by the lake in about half an hour, is that ok with you?"

  'Yes.'

So half an hour later the two were down by the lake, waiting for Orage Nauge's twin. They waited, and they waited, but no one came; then just as they began to walk back a black Egyptis bounded out towards Orage Nauge, knocking her over. Once Orage Nauge realised it was her sister she returned the affectionate licks, Dove's frown turned upside down into a smile and she greeted Astran's bondmate. As the even drew on Orage Nauge began to grow restless, she didn't want her sister to leave.

But of course Astran and her bondmate did, but after seeing how distressed Orage Nauge got they agreed to visit again, which cheered Orage Nauge up. That night Dove stayed out with Orage Nauge, and together, they fell asleep under the stars.
