How much fabric... how to cut the fabric

59.40" X 76.37" without any borders

71.40" x  88.37" with one 3 1/2" border and one 4 1/2" border.

  Large size quilt

It has 6 inch blocks and is a larger size than the lap size...  you can add borders to make it a queen or king size.

It has two twist colors and a dark background.

You can use any colors.  Substitute your fabrics...

It is set "on point" with setting triangles around the whole outside that match the background fabric so the quilt seems to "float".

It has two mitered  borders.  The first border is 3 1/2" inches and the second border is 4 1/2" inches.  You can surely change the borders to any style/width you choose.  This will increase/decrease the size of your finished quilt.

The two "twist" fabrics are the blue and yellow in this graphic, with a red background.

These two larger quilts have 48 "twist blocks" and 63 "snowball" blocks.

How to cut the fabric.

Twist blocks and snowball triangle corner fabric:
1 1/2 yards of EACH fabric for the twist blocks and the corner triangles.
(it is 1 1/3 yard exactly but allow extra fabric for crooked cuts and, shrinkage)

Background fabric:  4 yards

Borders and binding will be extra of one fabric.  See info on "Borders" on Lap Quilt size page.
Cutting the twist blocks and snowball triangle corner fabric:

Cut six strips of each "twist" fabric 4 1/2  inches wide
by the width of the fabric from selvage to selvage.
Sub-cut into 2 1/2 inch wide segments

You need 96 rectangles of EACH twist fabric.  They will be 4 1/2" by 2 1/2 inches.

Following the directions for the lap size quilt for cutting, sub cut the "twist"  fabric strips into 2 1/2 inch wide segments. Sew following the directions for the lap size quilt.

You should be able to sub-cut 16,  2 1/2" segments from each strip...  you need 96 rectangles total of each color... divided by 16 equals 6 strips, the strips are 4.5" so multiply that by 6 and you get  27" of fabric "exactly" but allow extra fabric for crooked cuts and, shrinkage .

Cutting the snowball block triangle corners:
...
You will need 110,  2 1/2" inch squares of your first twist fabric and 110, 2 1/2  inch squares of your second twist fabric.  (In other words, you will need 110, 2 1/2 inch squares of EACH twist fabric)

So you need to cut 7  strips 2 1/2" wide from selvage to selvage of each fabric,
and sub-cut those strips into 110,  2 1/2" squares.

Following the directions for the lap size quilt for cutting, sub cut the "twist"  fabric strips into 2  inch square segments.  Sew following the directions for the lap size quilt.

(You should be able to cut 16 squares across your fabric selvage to selvage and you need 110 squares so that comes to 6.88 or round to 7 strips of fabric...  7 strips times 2.5 inches wide of fabric for the snowball block triangle corners is 17 1/2" of fabric.  Add that to the amount you need for the twist blocks (27 +17.5) and you come up with 44.5 inches of fabric of each color... divide by 36 and you get 1.24 yards...)

Cutting background fabric:
... Cutting the center of twist block:

You will need 48,  2 1/2"  squares of the background for the center of the twist blocks.

Cut 3 strips of fabric 2 1/2"  inches wide and sub-cut into 48, 2 1/2" inch squares.  You should be able to get 16 squares from each strip. You will have a few extra.

(7.5" of fabric exactly)

Snowball blocks:.......
Snowball block background squares:
..You need 63 background squares that are 6 1/2" for the snowball blocks .
So, cut 11 strips of the background (snowball) fabric 6 1/2 inches wide from selvage to selvage.

You should be able to get 6 blocks from each strip of fabric. (you will have three extra)

71.5" of fabric (2 yards)

.....Setting triangles:

You will need 28 setting triangles.  The easiest way to cut them so the outside edges are on the straight of the grain is to cut oversize squares and cut those on each diagonal from one corner to the other to create triangles.

You will need 7,  12 inch squares of the background fabric.  Sub cut those on each diagonal to make  28 triangles.  You should be able to get 3 across each strip with a little left over. You can save some fabric by not cutting strips but just the blocks and you will have some fabric left over along one edge.

( 36" of fabric)

...For the four outside corners you have to cut the triangles differently so the straight edge is on the outside.  You need to cut the squares only on one diagonal.

Cut two background squares that are 9 inches and then cut them on one diagonal to make 4 triangles.

If you are making a larger quilt you can get 4 squares across your fabric so figure as above accordingly.

(9 inches)

How much background fabric do you need? Add up you numbers:

7.5", 71.5", 36" and 9" = 124 inches.  Divide that by 36 for yardage and you need 3.44  yards background fabric for the quilt.  That was easy right?

I always buy extra to compensate for crooked cuts, shrinkage, mistakes and stash. I would get 4 yards in this case.

What else will you need to cut? You will need borders but that is your choice of style and size.

You will also need backing and binding.
