The Smartjacket
The Jacket Advantages Problems Research The Future

The breakthroughs that are necessary in order for this Smartjacket to be made include: a long-lasting battery, water resistant insulation for the wires, durable micro-sized electric wires, a “glitch-free” monitor, hydrophobic nontoxic chemicals to treat textiles, and the ability to mass produce all of this.  The battery needs to be long-lasting, as well as flat and lightweight, since it will be in the jacket at all times.  Water and water vapor cannot affect the wires, or the jacket will not function properly.  The wires must be durable, since they are needed for the jacket to carry heat.  The controller must be extremely reliable, since a tiny mistake can affect one’s health; including electrocution. Of course a method of mass producing the Smartjacket needs to be created, in order to lower the prices slightly.

In order to be environment friendly, it will be necessary to create hydrophobic nontoxic chemicals to treat the textiles, and wires, to make them waterproof while looking out for the environment.  Currently, there are wires of all diameters insulated by Platinum Iridium Teflon coating.  There must also be a way for the owner of the coat to treat the wires in case the insulation is damaged.  At the same time, the battery and the monitor must be calibrated and must form a circuit to generate heat.

Our original goal was design an eco-friendly and technologically advanced jacket that is affordable to everyone.  The first half of the goal can be accomplished if these breakthroughs occur, but the second half is be a bigger challenge.  Experimental processes are costly, and mass producing is even more expensive.
