It probes the complex issues that are involved in this ongoing life process. Five themes run throughout this book: the experience of adoptees; developmental perspectives; normality; search for self and sense of loss. Being Adopted is a compelling read for all members of the adoption triangle. JOURNEY OF THE ADOPTED SELF: A Quest For Wholeness by Betty Jean Lifton In exploring the inner world of the adopted person, Lifton shows that the search for biological and historical roots can be a journey towards wholeness. This book draws on a study of adult adoptees as well as the author's personal experiences to illuminate how adoptees form an authentic sense of self. This is a collection of personal stories and photographs giving some unique insights into what it is like to grow up in a family where you are of a different race to those around you. We are able to learn about racism, about the sense of loss that adoption can create, about the love within many of these families, and importantly, about what has made the difference between a positive and a negative experience of adotpion. We follow the journeys of the adoptees as they write with honesty about their struggles to incorporate a positive racial identity into their sense of self.
