He came to the United States in the 1850's and resided in Detroit were he was a shoemaker's apprentice.

When the war actually started in 1861, he was not as yet an American citizen. Nevertheless, he enlisted into A Co, 2nd Reg. Mich. Vol. Inf. on {18 April 1861}. 25 May 1861 {in Detroit Michigan}.

He was discharged on 01 December 1863 and re-enlisted the same day in the Veteran Volunteers and reassigned to A Co.

On 01 November 1864 he was promoted to Sergeant and on 01 May 1865 was promoted to First Sergeant.

On 28 July 1865 he was discharged {for Commision}, re-enlisted, and was reassigned to A CO. On 02 August 1865 he was commissioned a second lieutenant (postdated to 22 July 1865) by Governor Henery H. Crapo.

{He was Mustered Out with the regiment on the 28th July 1865 at Delaney House DC.}

He was naturalized as an American Citizen based on his service in the Army on 27 October 1865.

Coy A Roster with his Stamp "Here is a A CO Roster written (possibly written by someone else and later verified) by 1st SGT John Freeman. He is listed on this Roster as a private yet has a is SGTs stamp on it so, who knows. The existance of CPL Wm. Gundlach in 4th Squad is an indication that this was written before 1863 and thus before Freeman was made 1st SGT. Anyway it is an invaluable document as it provides evidence of SQUAD assignments.
