Bohner, Edward

Co. "A"

"Edward enlisted on March 22, 1864 in Co. A of 2nd Michigan Infantry, Hillsdale County, Michigan and was mustered out June 2, 1865.

He had grey eyes, and a fair complexion."

He enlisted as a Private, listing his home as Amboy, on the 21st of March 1864 in Amboy. He was 22 years old when he enlisted.

"During his service in the Civil War, on July 30, 1864, he was shot in the right shoulder, and in his left leg, and was treated at Mt. Pleasant Hospital in Washington,D.C., where he was discharged from the army on June 2, 1864, because of his wound.

In one of the engagements of the wilderness, he was made a prisoner, but in an unguarded moment he overcame his enemy, and made his escape."

According to official records he was discharged (mustered out) on June 2nd 1865 in Washington Dc.

"Edward received an army pension, and I obtained his war record. His uncle and cousins lived in the West Unity area, and that is probably how he met Elizabeth his wife."

He joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Hiram Louden Post 155 in Montpelier.

"According to Edwina Bankson, granddaughter of Edward and Elizabeth, Elizabeth was Catholic, and because she married outside the church, she was disowned by her family.

She says her mother went to Ft. Wayne, Indiana one time to visit Elizabeth's family, and the door was shut in their face.

Most of Edward's children were born in Amboy Township, Hillsdale County Michigan, which is located on the North side of Williams County, Ohio.

They lived either in Detroit, Michigan or Montpelier, Ohio all their lives. The railroad connected Montpelier and Detroit, and some moved back and forth.

He was disabled in 1912, because of war wound and admitted to the Soldiers and Sailors on October 17, 1916 with paraplegia.

According to Joseph Paul Bohner (December 28, 2001): "Edward died of heart disease during the blizzard of 1918, and his body was held in the funeral home, until they could get to the cemetery. He was then taken out and buried in the snow, until it melted and they could dig his grave on January 26, 1918.
