Agrimony
Animal = Used for jaundice. It is given to fasting animals as a drench or finely cut and mixed with bran. One-half handful of herb is brewed in 1� pints of water for 2 hours, then 1/2 pint of skim milk is added; sweeten with molasses. Divide in 2 parts and give 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose at night while the animal is fasting. For sprains, a lotion is made by boiling a handful of chopped herb in 1 quart of brew made from wheat bran; boil 30 minutes; brew for 2 hours; stir in 2 Tbsp beer. Useful for strained limbs of horses when massaged into flesh.
Magical = Agrimony is often used in spells intended to banish negative energy and negative spirits. It can also be used to reverse spells returning them to the sender. It is believed that placing Agrimony under the head of a sleeping person will cause a deep sleep that will remain until the herb is removed.
Medicinal = An infusion of the leaves can be used to treat Jaundice and other liver ailments. A fromentation when used externally can be used to treat athletes foot, insect bites, slow healing wounds and sores.
*Warnigs* = Use in moderation. Not for use during pregnancy or when one is constipated. High doses may slow heartbeat.

Alfalfa
Animal =A valuable livestock fodder, tonic and nervine, but in large quanities can lead to bloating due to saponin content.
Magical = A small jar of Alfalfa kept in the pantry will protect the home from hunger and poverty. Scatter Alfalfa ashes around the home to bring prosperity and to protect it.
Medicinal = Used to help the recuperation of narcotic and alcohal addicted patients. Can elimate water retention and relieves urinary and bowel problems. Can also be used to treat anemia, fatigue, peptic ulcers. Great for building over all good health.

Allspice
Magical = Allspice encourages healing and is used in mixtures to ask for good fortune and money.
Medicinal = Allspice is used as a paste to soothe and relieve toothaches and as a mouthwash to freshen breath.

Aloe Vera
Animal =Used for constipaton, indigestion, worms, urinary ailments, mastitis, and skin ailments. Used as a lotion for corneal ulcers and karatitis. The gel is applied to wounds, sores, bruises, and tumors. For mastitis, massage the cold gel into the area 3 times daily. A dose is 7 grains of powdered gel in 1cup tepid liquid consisting of equal parts of milk and water and given fasting morning and night.
Magical = Growing an Aloe Vera plant in the kitchen will help prevent burns and other mishaps while cooking. It will also help prevent other household accidents and guards the home against evil.
Medicinal = Used to treat burns, skin rashes and insect bites. It can also be used to treat chaffed nipples caused by breast feeding. Internally it can be used to keep bowels funtioning smoothly. .
*Warnigs* = May cause intestinal cramping.


Amaranth
Magical = Is used to repair broken hearts and is associated with immortality. Amaranth is often used to decorate images of Gods and Goddess. This herb is sacred to the God Artemis. Woven into a wreath it is said to render the wearer invisible and is often used in pagan burial ceremonies.
Medicinal = Used to ease the symptoms of diarrhea, gastoenterites and the stomach flu. It was used by Native Americans to stop mentruation and as a controceptive. When applied externally it can reduce swelling in sprains and tick bites.
*Warnigs* = This herb is not to be used by pregant or lactating women.


Angelica
Animals = Used as a general tonic and fertility aid and for removal of internal obstructions. Stems used as fertility aid. Seeds used as digestive tonic. Roots (given raw as shavings) to remove stones and hard matter of the bladder and bowels.
Magical = Grow this herb in your garden as a protection for the garden and home.The root is often worn as a protective amulet. Burn the leaves to banish evil. Angelica is said to lengthen life. Adding it to a ritual bath will break spells and hexes.
Medicinal = Angelica is a good herb to use in tea remedies for colic, indigestion, gas, hepatitis and heart burn. This herb is known to promote circulation and energize the body. It is used to stimulate suppressed mentruation.
*Warnigs* = Angelica should not be used by pregnant women or by people who suffer from diabetes.


Anise
Animals = Used for cows to increase milk production. Powdered seeds once used in condition" pills for horses. Used for colic and digestive problems in animals. Used in health-formula puppy foods for weaning pups.
Magical = Anise mixed with Bay leaves provides an excellent additive to a bath before ritual. Using Anise in potpourri around the house wards off evil. Adding Anise to your sleeping pillow will chase away nightmares. It is believed that hanging an Anise seed head on your bed post will restore lost youth.
Medicinal = A good herb for colic, gas and indigestion. Aides in loosening phlegn and is often used in cough remedies.

Anise Recipes

Apple
Animals = The crab apple is used for its astringent properties. For wounds both internal and external the fruits are pulped and mixed with a little corn flour...treatment for diarrhea is similar. A cupful of the pulp is given midday and evening before meals or when fasting. It is helpful against scabies, as a stomach and intestinal medicine and to check internal bleeding. Good nerve and heart tonic which is said to improve the speed of racing animals. Apple juice is used for exhaustion due to distemper and is given to a cocker-sized animal at the rate of 2 Tbsp at morning and night. For dysentary, 1 Tbsp is given morning and night. For swollen glands a hot lotion is made by dissolving powdered seaweed in hot apple cider and applying externally.
Magical = Apple blossoms are used in incense for healing and love. An apple can be given to your lover as a gift. You should eat one half and your lover the other. It is also given as an offering to the dead during Samhain rituals because it symbolizes immortality. Apple wood is used to make magical wands and pouring apple cider on the ground before planting your garden is said to give the soil life.
Medicinal = Apples can be used to treat constipation. The fresh pectin from apples can help lower cholesterol levels and aids in the treatment of heart disease. Crushed apple leaves can be rubbed on a fresh wound to prevent infection.
