Setup NEC DVD
Did you buy NEC 16x ND-3500A DVD+ -RW DL Internal Drive - Black (OEM) and having difficulty in seting it up? I did spend two days to figure out a way to burn a movie.

Here are few items you might want to check.
  1. Check the jumper setting. If you are connecting the DVD as second drive(secondary slave), you might want to change the jumper to the first pin. The burner comes with secondary master setting (third pin)
  2. You might want to update with the latest (2.18) firmware. Download from softpedia.com
  3. If you are using Dell Dimention 4600 (as me) you might see your windows explorer CD instead of DVD. That seems to be fine, you will not need any additional driver for Windows.
  4. You will need a good software to burn your movies. Try trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6. I had trouble using Neo (trail version). I had Canon software, it dint recogonize the DVD drive!
  5. Pegasys has a very good converter too. I used TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress

Check 21 Added 26 Oct 2004

"The law facilitates check truncation by creating a new negotiable instrument called a substitute check, which would permit banks to truncate original checks, to process check information electronically, and to deliver substitute checks to banks that want to continue receiving paper checks. A substitute check would be the legal equivalent of the original check and would include all the information contained on the original check." Source : Federal Reserve

Space Veggies Added 20 Oct 2004
Space Veggies!

"The produce departments of the future may look like nothing on earth, and with good reason. Chinese scientists have been growing tomatoes the size of softballs, cucumbers as long as baseball bats and other outsize fruits and vegetables, using seeds that have been shot into space. The seeds are then exposed to seven types of extraterrestrial conditions, from zero gravity and cosmic radiation to subatomic particles. As these space veggies grow back on earth, they are selected for desirable traits—bulk, appearance or certain nutrients—then bred through successive generations to ensure that the mutations are consistent." Too good to be true, but it is! Added 15 Oct 2004

"As a physician who developed cancer herself, Dr. Lorraine Day was well aware that physicians are more afraid of cancer than patients are, because doctors KNOW that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are NOT the answer to cancer"

"She will help you understand why you don't need to fear cancer. She explains to you in terms you can understand all the confusing medical jargon you will hear from doctors. By following the orderly system of evaluation that she presents, you can then make calm, intelligent decisions about the best treatment methods for you."

Yeah, she is doing business but the techiniques seems to work. Lorraine Day, M.D.

Netflix and TiVo Added 07 Oct 2004

Newsweek reports, "... with the partnership (Netflix and TiVo) officially announced last week, customers of both services will have the option to download movies over broadband Internet connections right to their television. It won't happen right away. The partners first have to prove to the Hollywood studios that delivering movies over the Net and onto TiVo boxed is profitable and secure from piracy. If they succeed, there won't be any reason to ever leave the couch."

Now I know why Verizon Communication and Amazon were showing interest in NetFix (source : BusinessWeek)

Schwarzenegger's speech nevertheless reached the inner core of immigrant emotions, "It's a privilege to be born here. It's an honour to become a citizen here. It's a gift to raise your family here to vote here and to live here," said he, echoing emotions most affluent Indian Americans feel, but which has been eroded for many South Asians following the backlash after 9/11.

All your IRA money doesn't have to be in paper

Most investors believe they cannot use IRA money to buy real estate. Developed or undeveloped. They are wrong.

You can invest IRA money in a wide range of investments, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money market funds, saving certificates, U.S. Treasury securities, promissory notes secured by mortgages or deeds of trust, limited partnerships and … real estate. That includes houses, condos, office buildings -- even if located in another country.

Adam's or Anumar's Bridge Added 27 Aug 2004

Rama's Bridge or Adam's Bridge is a narrow land connection between Sri Lanka and the Indian mainland which, according to the Ramayana (Chapter 66, The Great Causeway), was constructed around at Rama's request by his subjects. This roughly 30 km long bridge is now mostly submerged approximately 1.2 m below sea level, with only a chain of limestone shoals left showing. It is, however, clearly visible in satellite photos taken by NASA such as the one shown here. The alternate name Adam's Bridge derives from the notion that the biblical Garden of Eden was Sri Lanka. Temple records suggest that the bridge may have been submerged by a violent storm as recently as 1480
