| Thomas Wesley Prout Born November 1, 1856 London, Ontario Died September 5, 1918 Portage La Prairie, Manitoba Married July 10, 1883 in Warwick Township, Watford County, Ontario to: Emmeline Clark Born August 12, 1858 Warwick Township, Ontario Died June 5, 1934 Portage La Prairie, Manitoba With the railway breaking through to the west Thomas followed it and took up farming between Portage La Prairie and High Bluff Manitoba and was very successful at this venture. He returned to Ontario and married Emmeline taking her west to start their life and family. Thomas later sold the farm and went into partnership with a Doctor. W.B. Taylor purchasing a livery stable in the middle of the town of Portage. Thomas and Emmeline lived in a small suite over the stable while a house was being built for them. The very day they were to move into their new home their first born child, John Wesley, decided it was time to make an appearance thus delaying their plans! John would always take great pride in telling people he was "born in a barn" and indeed he truly was! When the partnership with the stable disolved, Thomas took over the implement buisness of the local John Deere Company. He became district manage and was very well known to all the locals in the Portage area through his farm machinery sales. Thomas eventually became the owner of a huge warehouse in town. Every fall he would have a large shipment of apples brought in that he stored in the cold cellar of this warehouse. They lasted pretty well right through the cold Manitoba winters and was the only fresh fruit available to anyone for mile around. Thomas took an active interest in the town business of Portage and served the east ward ratepayers on the town council board from 1903 - 1904 and again from 1908 - 1910. He was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge and was the first local citizen to own a car! It didn't go very fast at all and was easily overtaken by the horse and buggies that were still in use but it was the talk of the town! Emmeline and Thomas had ten children namely: John Wesley; Myrtle Rosella; Mable Estelle; Wilfred; Ernest; Marion Gladys; Kitty Galsworthy; Aimee Winnifred; Pearl; Thomas Earl and Vivian Fay. Emmeline cared for her large family and both her parents and Thomas's in their large house on Garfield Street. ****************************************************************************************************************** John Wesley Prout Born August 23, 1884 Portage La Prairie, Manitoba Died September 26, 1983 Winnipeg, Manitoba Married February 17, 1904 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to: Eva Edna Miller Born July 1, 1883 Napanee.
