Wismer, Norman

Norman Wismer Struck by Freight Train Early This Morning

Norman Wismer, a well known local citizen, was instantly killed this morning about 6:30 a.m. when he was struck by a C.P.R. freight train on the tracks between Elizabeth Street and Tupper Street.  The body was dragged for some distance and badly mutilated.  It was purely accidental and no inquest will be necessary stated Dr. W.E. Metcalfe, coroner.  The body is at Rea's Funeral Home.

From particulars received it appears that Mr. Wismer was walking east on the M & N Branch and apparently did not notice or hear the approaching freight train from the west.  The engineer of the freight train whistled several times and thoght that the deceased would move off the track at the last moment but he did not.  The brakes were immediately applied and the train brought to a stop within reasonable distance.  Fellow employees of the Lake of the Woods saw the accident but did not realize that it was Mr. Wismer.  The late Mr. Wismer has been a resident of the district for many years and is an officer of the Army and Navy Veterans Unit.  The flag on the Army and Navy Headquarters is flying half masted in respect of his memory.

The late Mr. Wismer was a veteran of the Freat War and was second vice president of the Army and Navy.  In addition to a sorrowing wife there is a family of five surviving: Ira of Winnipeg, Mrs. J. Glennie of Winnipeg, Russell at home, Lily of Duluth and a daughter at home.

Where the trees of memory grow;
Nutured by the kindness
And concern that good friends show.

The roots are cherished memories
Of good times in the past;

It's a place of peace and beauty
Where brighter hopes can start;
It's memory's lovely garden
That soothes the hurting heart."
