The family story passed down about our English Prout family is that they were a family of sheep herders in England. According to the information collected in the 1901 Canadian census, they immigrated to Canada in 1856. In 1881, Thomas and Kitty were farmers living around Watford Village in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada. They had six children namely: Thomas, John Galsworthy, Simon, Mary, Elizabeth and Richard. Their eldest son, Thomas went west and settled in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba when the railway went through and at some point in time Thomas and Catherine moved as well. They bought a farm just outside of town and Thomas became well known in the area for his gardening expertise. After retiring, Thomas and Kitty sold their home and moved in with their son Thomas and daughter-in-law Emmeline. Iola Prout Winters related a few stories about memories she had of her great-grandparents. Of Thomas she remembered that everyday the weather was nice he had a family member push him in his wheelchair to sit at a gathering place in town to while away the hours. Thomas had a big secret and took great pleasure (as did the townfolk who knew about it) in shocking strangers! You see he had a very small pet who actually lived in his long white beard. A little pink and white rat that would poke itself out from under once in awhile giving those who had not met him before a near heart attack! Iola recalled "my great grandfatherhad a wonderful sense of humour and was the most amusing old man! Now I remember grandma Kitty! She was a real tiny lady always dressed in black carrying a Bible every where she went and was real sour like. She was a devoted Christian and always told us if we weren't really good children and said our prayers we would never get to heaven! I was kind of scared of her and my great grandma Tompkins! Come to think of it my grandma Emmeline didn't have much of a sense of humour either! It was probably just really hard for her taking care of all of those old people all the time!" |

Three scenarios regarding Mary are possibilities. Mary died in early childhood or married in Ontario and never came to Manitoba with her family. Known fondly by her Prout family members as "Aunt Lizzie", she delivered almost all of them that I write about! She was a special friend of Eva Miller Prout and both ladies were remembered fondly for their kindness to all they encountered.
