| This Heritage Listed Town is strolling along at its own pace in comparison to the capital, Vientiane. The town is serene with a strong indication of European/French influence in architecture and the various French bakeries and patisseries through the town. You can get up at 5am to participate or observe the daily alms giving to monks as they pass by each household. Afterwards, you can take a walk along the Mekong River to find some traditional breakfasts, grilled bananas, rice porridge, noodle soup etc. Then perhaps rent a bike or keep walking around the town stopping by the various temples that gives this town worth preserving. |
You can also walk the hundreds of steps to the summit of Mount Si in the centre of town - or find fellow travellers who would like to share a chartered songthaew (converted ute with hard seats) for a day trip to the Kuang Xi Waterfall (where you can also opt for a 3hr or 4hr local trek tour there and a drive back - and take a dip of absolutely freezing water), cascading over limestone formations. Or a day trip to surrounding villages, silk village, nearby towns for a guided trek etc. Otherwise you can explore the local fresh produce market, general market or villagers market (Maew market). Bargain your way through for the most exquisite handicraft work - done right on the spot if you should desire so ... Then there is the boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves / Tum Ting where hundreds of Buddha statues reside through many generations. |
