A landlocked country still strolling along 20 years behind the modern world, this country is full of culture, tradition and sincere smiles for each other as well as the new foreigners that are slowly trickling in. Amidst the serene population there lay a land very tragically bombed during the revolutionary years (1975?), yet this fact remains unknown to many. But that was the past, now this once Communist country and her people are now democratic & seem ready to face the future. The Lao people of the country Lao PDR (Laos) are opening their arms to the steady development of tourism as one of their main national investments.

one of many great handiworks of religious mythical figures in Laos - this one is upon the exterior walls of Wat Prakaow in Vientiane

Does this country sound intriguing by these words? Well, can you just imagine the reality of it then? These are merely words of description, but when you take the chance to experience such a hidden beauty as the less-discovered Laos you will be able to feel these words and go beyond your expectations of travel and life experience.
This devoutly Buddhist country offers many natural sights some of which are listed as an UNESCO World Heritage sights. From the rolling mountains throughout the country, to many minority villages that still keep themselves separated from the townships of Laos. Then there are some beautiful waterfalls cascading over limestone structures in Luarng Prabang (North) to the largest waterfall in South East Asia in the South.
Although tourism is developing rather rapidly in Laos, it is still comparatively slow and well contained by the governments desire to retain the traditional Lao-ness (reserved, laid-back, religious) while stepping forward into the very unpredictable global village. It is this fact that makes this country very intriguing and appealing for exploration, being such a great contrast to the much more developed country we currently live in, Australia.
Though the local transportation means may be basic and the roads may be rough, the spirit of the population and the natural appeal of this land will entice you. It is guaranteed that you will wish to return to this country time and time again, to see her progress or perhaps her traditional retention.
Many distinctive religious shrines, food and activities one can observe or even participate in. This includes a 5am alms giving to monks by the roadside, play a game of ka taw, visit local schools, learn and take Lao herbal massage, meditation weekend at a local temple and the list goes on. (For more information on annual Lao events go to L'EVENTS)

Also, dont keep to yourselves chat to the locals, you will learn many things outside your guidebooks and tour groups.
