Writeup

KWSH was founded in 1910. It aims to provide health care services to the sick and poor in Singapore regardless of race, language and religion. The charitable organization currently has the capacity to host 370 nursing home and 30 hospital beds consisted mostly of the elderly and bedridden.

Being a charitable organization, KWSH is supported by funds from individuals and corporate donations. As the residents' stay are subsidized and with the inclusion of around 30 Public Assistance personnel, there is a strong need to inject financial funds constantly. Furthermore, with an aging community in Singapore, there is a strong need to raise the awareness of caring for the elderly to make Singapore a caring and gracious community. KWSH, with its rich historical Singapore roots aiming to assist the poor, consists of all the elements required to drive for a made-in-Singapore charity drive.

In Year 2000, KWSH provided medical service to about 14,489 outpatients and 330 inpatients. It has an annual operating budget of S$5.4 million. Of which, about half of the budget has to be raised through donations. As it is non-government funded and not affiliated to Community Chest, spirited public assistance to raise the organization awareness as well as financial needs is paramount to its continual existence.

KWSH began as a nursing home with a small site beside the old Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). When TTSH moved out of the site to Balestier, the site was sold to KWSH at a nominal price. However, the land is only on a 99-year lease and now, KWSH faces the burning problem of either extending the contract or relocate to another area. Either case would require a substantial amount of funds, which they are seriously in need of. Moreover, plans have to make fast as a transition plan for the sick and elderly needs to be developed.

Other than funds, KWSH also requires a continual support from volunteers to help bring joy to the residents.

With over 90 years of history, KWSH has witnessed the growth of Singapore and never stopped contributing to her society. It survived through WWII and the last economic dip. We believe with the warmth of Singaporeans, KWSH will continue to stand and witness the future of our country. Please lend our supporting hands to this charitable organisation.
