NewsGroups on the Net!
Newsgroups are a means of public discussion and distribution of material to a large number of people. Newsgroup messages are not stored in a single central location (as with a Web Sites etc.) or distributed from single central location. Instead, they are stored on a multitude of 'News servers' that are operated by Internet service providers (I.S.P.s) for their customers, by schools and universities for their students and staff, by companies for their employees, etc. When someone posts a message in a Newsgroup, it is first stored on their provider's News server. That server then distributes copies of the message to its 'peers', that is, to other servers with which it has agreed to exchange Newsgroup messages directly. Those servers then distribute copies to their 'peers' and so on, until (in principle) all the server which carry that Newsgroup have a copy of the message. When someone reads a message in a Newsgroup, he/she is reading the copy that is stored on his/her provider's news server. You can read and post to Newsgroups using *News clients* (also called *Newsreaders*) such as Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Outlook Express, and a variety of other software packages for Windows, Unix, MacOS and other operating systems. These Newsreaders communicate with news servers via the NNTP protocol (Network News Transfer Protocol). NNTP also specifies how News servers exchange messages with each other. Note: NewsGroups are a great source of MPEG files. Due to the posting limitations of NewsGroups you will most likely need a file joiner to re-assemble the split movie parts. In your NewsReader search the groups list for "MULTIMEDIA" "MOVIES" "MPEG" etc. If you need File Joiners check here. Warning: NewsGroup messages sometimes contain computer viruses. read more here |

Once you have your Newsreader software installed you will need to set it to check your Newsgroup server for groups and messages. Your Internet Service Provider (I.S.P.) will most likely offer access to a Newsgroup server as an additional service. Search your I.S.P.'s Web Site for the URL of their news server. It will usually be in the form of - 'news.yourisp.com'. Follow your Newsreaders instruction for setting up new servers. The first time that you connect with a Newserver you are required to download a complete list of groups carried by that server. There are over 80,000 Newsgroups at the moment. It is unlikely that your I.S.P. will offer more than about 30,000 groups. If your I.S.P. does not carry the group/s that you require you will need to subscribe to a Premium service offered by many Internet companies. www.usenet-access.com/ is highly recommended. They
carry over 80,000 uncensored groups, they do not log
uploads or downloads as some I.S.P.s do and they charge
only US$6.00 per month. After setting up your Newsreader and downloading a list of Newsgroups use your program's search function to look for groups that interest you. Newsgroups containing graphic files (photos etc) will be found under alt.binaries.xxxxxx and Newsgroups containing movie files will be found under alt.binaries.multimedia.xxxxx. Note: To access NewsGroups you will need a News Reader. If you have 'Windows 9x' and 'MS Internet Explorer' installed then you will probably have 'MS Outlook Express' as well. As well as being an Email program it will also access NewsGroups. BUT due to security issues this program is not recommended. You can't do much better than "AGENT" News Reader. A FREE version (FREE AGENT) is available. Check here. |
