Wo+men
Against Child Abuse
has noticed a disturbing trend when child abuse cases are being reported,
judged and generally discussed.
It greatly
concerns us to hear comments like:...
"She
came on-to-me" - statement by a 37yr old male in his defence
against raping a 3-year-old.
"She was wearing such a short skirt, he could not help himself"
- defence attorneys plea to the Magistrate.
"She is sleeping with a lot of boys, why is it child abuse if
I sleep with her" - a fathers statement to the police after being
arrested for raping his 11-year-old daughter.
These and other archaic statements has fuelled and motivated Wo+men
Against Child Abuse to submit 5 articles during Child Protection Week
(25th May - 1st June 2004) to (re) educate and return back-to-basics
regarding the factors and issues that surround child abuse in South
Africa.
Please feel
free to use the articles at your discretion and I would like to challenge
your publication to publish them not only in an attempt to educate,
but to also re-establish norms and values that we can all authentically
live by.
