1. Drugs Awareness for Beginners

This is a first course for anyone who works with the public that is likely to meet individuals who use substances (Tier 1), to develop understanding of substances in society and look at attitudes to substance users.

This course will enable participants to:
� Learn the main groups of drugs
� Develop an understanding of the reasons why people use substances.
� Knowledge of the law regarding controlled substances.
� Skills to enable individuals to access specialist services.

DANOS units supported by Drugs Awareness for Beginners:
AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
AA3 Support individuals to access and use services and facilities

2. Introduction to Drugs Work

This course is designed for all professional disciplines that work with individuals with substance problems (Tiers 1 & 2), who need a working knowledge of substance misuse services, how to access them and the interventions that are available.

This course will enable participants to:
� Screen for substance use
� Refer individuals to appropriate specialist services
� Advise individuals of the effects and risks of substances
� Plan and deliver drugs prevention/education

AA2 Relate to, and interact with, individuals
AA6 Promote choice, well-being and the protection of all individuals
AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
AC1 Reflect on and develop your practice
AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
AD4 Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social well-being
