The Gate Way of India, was built as a memorial for the visit of King George VI and Queen Mary in 1911, it marks a ceremonial spot at Apollo Bunder where the viceroys, governors and distinguished visitors first stepped foot in India in the days when air travel was not common. Long before it actually had an edifice of that name, Mumbai was known as "The Gate Way of India". This is the first land mark which will be seen by travellers arriving into the harbour by ship.
