History

The International MOMS ClubŪ is a support group for mothers who have chosen to stay at home with their children. The Club was founded in 1983 by Mary James, a stay-at-home mother, who wanted to meet other stay-at-home mothers. When she found there were not any existing organizations that encouraged moms to participate and bring children, she founded the International MOMS Club. Today there are more than 2,000 Moms Club chapters nationwide with over 100,000 members. In addition, chapters are forming across the world.

The MOMS ClubŪ of Portsmouth was originally founded as the MOMS Club of Aquidneck Island in 1993. The Club included all three towns located on Aquidneck Island, Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport. In 2001, due to increased membership and interest in the MOMS Club of Aquidneck Island, the chapter split into two separate chapters to better serve members with activities closer to home.
