(defunct) Made up of two childhood buddies, Silence was actually quite a ground-breaking act, one that still does not get the credit they deserve. They were fed up with the "normal" way of doing music. They were tired of playing by the usual "rules" of being in a band, like "playing instruments" or "making sounds" and "writing songs." So they created a musical genre that was completely non-elitist: silent music. No talent needed, no instruments necessary; just rock out to the music in your mind, act it out in a kind of "interpretational-dance of rock," and just "JAM!" Certainly, there have been imitators in the past - people who rock out to music other people have written, whether recorded or at a concert. Silence's innovation, however, was rocking out to their own music (or lack thereof). Silence performed live only once, and with Paul P missing in action. During our senior year of high school, Paul Z. and friend Chris Schreck played a show for some bewildered onlookers during gym class one day. The set included a few untitled originals and, upon requests by the audience, a few covers (Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman"). Silence was originally expected to play the Porkslab family barbeque, but Paul Z. wasn't there. There was also talk of making large standing cut-outs of the Pauls to put on stage, but I don't remember how that fit into the plan. Silence has since called it quits, and for the most part, remain in obscurity. But it's been said that true genius is often not appreciated until the artist is dead and gone; only in hindsight is their contribution truly apparent. I'm not Miss Cleo, but I bet the same thing will happen to Silence.
