latest news and finds ~ Poms in USA |
We know that Chuck Pomeroy has ancestors in Virginia. In Alexandria there was Walter Pomeroy who may have been of his tree. He was a cloth merchant. Chuck's direct line is in the Front Royal area and in nearby Augusta County I have found a Campbell Pomeroy. This proved to be a red herring . see below. Campbell and Leanna were alomost certainly married in Calofornia. Campbell Pomeroy in USA. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Campbell was in San Francisco, Census of 1930. Campbell Pomeroy, age 59 (born 1871?) is living with his daughter Virginia Pomeroy McGuire age 27, Percy J McGuire age 30 Son-in-law Kathleen McGuire, age 3. Percy is head of houshold, and is renting the quarters # 2331. Annie found just one Campbell Pomeroy on LDS site. date of birth estimated to be 1878,( Campbell born 1871) married Leana Moffatt Hanger 1898 in Virginia ; Leana was daughter of William Harvey Hanger and Mildred Rachel Bear, born 1880 in Churchville, Virginia. The Hangers were found in the 1901 census of California living in Petulana Sonoma CA. Her parents were William and Mildred were cousins. William Harvey Hanger . His family came from Germany and the Ancestral file in IGI has the first marriage in the New World in 1749 having come from Eschelbronn, Kraichgau, , Germany. Mildred Bear was also from Europe her family coming from Switzerland . Her ancestors have been traced back to 1545 in Zurich, Switzerland they come to the New World. The first mention is 1749 Lancaster Co, Pa. So these were an established family in America by the time our Pomeroys arrived around 1882-84. 1880 Census William Harvey Hanger I in IGI 1881 census with his wife Mildred in North River Augusta Virginia, a dry goods merchant age 25. Then he appears age 32 way across the continent in 1890 in a list of voters and a census index in Sonoma CA. Here he was also in a list of Militia men; as were a Charles and George Pomeroy. Charles Pomeroy also had a land grant in Sonoma , as did a Samuel Pomeroy. 1880 census California. Samuel Pomeroy a farmer in Analy Sonoma CA, age 52 , born in NY. Charles Pomeroy age 72, born NY who was Secretary of the San Jose Bank with his family, his family included an Edgar his son who was a Clerk in a grocery store. GeorgePomeroy, age 33 born IN, a book keeper in San Jose, Santa Clara CA; 1910 Edgar and Mattie and Gordon are living in Oakland. 1920 In Santa Rosa Sonoma Campbell with wife Lena (born in Virginia) with children Virginia aged 17 son Gordon and his nephew also Gordon aged 13 whose father was born in England Campbell at this time was a merchant and a music dealer. Edgar is living on his own in lodgings so it could be presumed that Mattie died after 1915 and before 1920 Sonoma is in the Napa Valley the wine growing district, right across the Bay from Hayward, Alemeda where we know Edgar established himself in the Soccer world. What chance that our Edgar Pom knew the same name Secretary of the San Jose Bank? Particularly as the secretary had a son called Edgar.????????????? Several family groups appear in the county and other Pomeroys are mentioned in local Newspapers, although Our two are not amonst them. I did not find WH Haywards name amongst the Sonoma land grants. Did William HHanger and perhaps Edgar Pom go to California together? Its possible Campbell went too, in 1888 he would have been 17 years old . We knownow that the migrated form Liverpoll in 1888. Although we have yet to find the ship. However they fared in California they would , I feel, have made a trip back to Virginia when Campbell married Leana there in 1898. Since it was quite common at that time for the men to cross the continent minus their womenfolk. I suspect they went ahead and found work or land and when they had established themselves, went back for the family. After that they seemed to have returned East because not only did William Harvey Hanger died in Sanoma in 1923 but Campbell and his daughter were in San Francisco in the 1930 census. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 'The first settlers arrived in Augusta County in the 1720's from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and from eastern Virginia. Some were German-born or the Pennsylvania-born children of German-speaking Protestant immigrants from the Palatinate and other areas bordering the Rhine River. These were Lutheran, Reformed or Brethren. The greatest number of early Augusta settlers were from the province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, or were the Pennsylvania and Maryland-born children of these Ulster Scots or Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Many early settlers took up land on the 112,000-acre tract that the colonial government granted to William Beverley. English and African-Americans were also among the early settlers in the area. Augusta County was created from Orange County in 1738. The courthouse began keeping records in 1745. At that time, it included all of present southwestern Virginia, most of present West Virginia and even stretched to the Mississippi River. As people began to settle in those western areas, new counties were cut off from Augusta, beginning in 1769 with Botetourt County, then Rockingham and Rockbridge in 1778. |
