Bure is standing in front of the bowed women, issuing directives at them. |
| Commander Bure: | Women will be pleased to know that the glorious Russian Red Army has captured France! |
Bure smirks and moves onto a new topic. |
| Commander Bure: | We have new option for women who want to improve themselves. |
June turns her head slightly, looking confused. |
| Commander Bure: | All women who are eligible are to make themselves available immediately as escorts. |
Bure nods to the Captain and steps back. Krylyova unfolds a clipboard with a sneer and begins to speak. |
| Captain Krylyova: | The women who have been chosen are to come forward. |
Krylyova starts to read out the women's numbers and names. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 1213 Datta, N. |
Norika takes two steps forward from the line, her head still lowered. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 1432 Hughes, M. |
Norika watches as Michelle takes a step forward also. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 2031 Marshall, C. |
Krylyova smiles grimly and turns over a page in his clipboard. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 2145 Hollis, W. 2346 Hagen, V. |
Norika observes as the number of women beside her grows. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 2455 Johnson, S. |
Krylyova continues to read off names from his list until he comes to the last page on his clipboard. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 4005 Croft, S. |
Krylyova comes to the last name on his list and a small chuckle escapes his lips. |
| Captain Krylyova: | 4114 Page, P. |
Krylyova snaps his clipboard closed and gives Polly a withering glare. Bure nods slowly. Polly takes several small steps forward, nodding at Norika. |
| Commander Bure: | All women named report to Lieutenant Bryzgarlin immediately! All other women are dismissed for food. |
Bure salutes briskly and leaves the area. |

Polly is slumped in a corner of the truck, alone, frightened and miserable. |
| Suzi Croft: | Does anyone have any idea of where we're going? |
Cathy raises her arms dominantly. |
| Cathy Marshall: | Look, if you'll all just shut up and calm down I'll tell ya! I've done this before! |
Cathy waits as the dozen or so women cease talking. |
| Polly Page: | Done what before, Cathy? |
| Cathy Marshall: | Look, all that's happening is that they're taking us to this hotel type place. They're wanting us as well, I guess, prostitutes. |
Polly gasps. Vicky digs her elbow into Polly's ribs, shutting her up. |
| Vicky Hagen: | Calm down, will ya! We get treated heaps will. Hot water, all the food, clothing we want. Cigarettes, everything! Apparently most of the guys are really loaded businessmen, so they're not all rough and tough like the guards. |
Polly's jaw drops. |
| Polly Page: | But every night... I'm not becoming a prostitute. |
Polly shakes her head. Vicky scoffs. |
| Vicky Hagen: | You'd be crazy to pass it up, honey. Not like where we are is any better. I mean, hot water, bubble bath, three course dinners! |
Vicky giggles, feeling warmer already. Polly looks disgusted. |
| Polly Page: | No thanks. I'd sooner stay here the rest of me life than do that. |
Cathy finishes off her speech. |
| Cathy Marshall: | But you dont have to worry. I mean, just check the place out, see what you think. If you're happy to go along with it, it's one hell of a cushy lifestyle, if not, it's back to that hell hole. |
Vicky gets to her feet promptly as the truck comes to a halt, delicately smoothing out her gown. Polly stumbles out of the truck between Suzi and Cathy, observing as the women form a straight line, leading to the hotel steps. |
| Suzi Croft: | Where are we going? |
| Cathy Marshall: | They'll take us into the hotel, show us around a bit, and then we decide if we wanna stay or not. |
Suzi looks apprehensive but shrugs and follows the others regardless. Sally is grinning at the other women. |
| Sally Johnson: | This is out ticket out of that dump, ladies! Cheer up, we're off to a life of endless fun. |
Suzi rolls her eyes. |
| Suzi Croft: | Well it's not much of a change for you is it Sally? |
Sally purses her lips and ignores Suzi's comments. Sally and Vicky begin to taunt Polly instead. |
| Sally Johnson: | How's the baby, babes? By the time you've spent a few days working here you'll be having twins! |
Sally chuckles. Polly scowls. |
| Polly Page: | I'm not staying. |
Vicky smirks. |
| Vicky Hagen: | Fine, all the more food for us then! |
Vicky heads arm in arm with Sally towards the entrance. Suzi stands still with her hands on her hips. |
| Suzi Croft: | Just look at them, I bet they volunteer for this brothel thing right away. |
Liz strides over to Suzi's side, observing the scene. |
| Liz Rawton: | Probably. Tramps! |
Suzi shakes her head. |
| Suzi Croft: | I bet they end up working in the same bed and charging double for their services! |
Liz chuckles. |
| Liz Rawton: | Wouldn't surprise me in the least. You thinking of taking up the offer? |
Suzi snorts. |
| Suzi Croft: | Hardly, I'm needed back at the camp. |
Suzi watches as Polly trails miserably up the stairs. |
| Suzi Croft: | Chin up, Poll. |
Polly cringes, following them towards the meeting room. |

The guard is winding up a long speech to the assembled women. |
| Russian Guard: | And you will all be well fed and groomed. You will have access to make-up and fine silk bathrobes. You will all be required to work at any time of the day and night and you must be 'obliging'. |
The guard smiles slowly. |
| Russian Guard: | Any questions, women? |
| Sally Johnson: | What's the going rate guv? |
The guard is not amused. |
| Russian Guard: | You will be clothed and fed in style. You will not be paid. Any other questions? |
Liz raises her voice boldly. |
| Liz Rawton: | What about medical and health facilities? Will there be routine medical examinations? |
The guard brushes the questions aside. |
| Russian Guard: | You will have no concerns, you will be well looked after. Now if that is all, I will leave you here to consider it. You have ten minutes to make your decision. |
The guard strides out of the room, leaving the women alone. Vicky rushes to Sally's side, the pair eagerly discussing the new adventure. |
| Vicky Hagen: | Almost too good to be true, ain't it! I mean, hot water, baths! |
| Sally Johnson: | Yeah and all our sexual needs catered for! It'll be a right laugh! |
Sally and Vicky chuckle uproariously. Suzi turns to Liz. |
| Suzi Croft: | I hope the rest of the women aren't like those two. |
| Liz Rawton: | It wouldn't surprise me! |
Suzi looks up at her friend, surprised by the regret in her voice. |
| Suzi Croft: | You sound almost like you're considering going along with this. You're not, are you? |
Liz scoffs. |
| Liz Rawton: | Oh, don't be silly, I'm not that mad. I was just curious. |
Suzi narrows her eyebrows. |
| Suzi Croft: | What's there to be curious about? |
Liz shrugs. |
| Liz Rawton: | I dunno, I mean seems nice and clean and all. Good food, clothing. All in all, healthier then that hole we live in! |
Suzi looks disbelivingly at Liz. |
| Suzi Croft: | But at what price? Would you sell your body in exchange for comfort? Leave the rest of us rotting in that dump while you live the high life? |
Liz rolls her eyes. |
| Liz Rawton: | Please, our decision's our own! We all have to look out for ourselves here! |
Suzi is not convinced. |
| Suzi Croft: | Yeah, maybe if we're greedy self-serving opportunists like Sally Johnson! Are you seriously considering abandoning all your friends in exchange for a bit of luxury? |
Suzi looks disgusted. Liz raises an eyebrow as she lowers her voice. |
| Liz Rawton: | Well maybe it wasn't me I was thinking about. |
Liz nods towards Polly, who is standing across the room with Cathy. Suzi follows Liz's gaze. |
| Suzi Croft: | Oh no, what the hell are you planning? You are not turning Polly into a prostitute Liz! |
Suzi backs away from Liz. She pulls her shoulder gently, whispering enthusiastically. |
| Liz Rawton: | Look, listen to me for a sec, will ya! It's no worse than what goes on back at the camp, is it! At least here they've got better conditions, good food and all the rest. It'd be better for her and the baby. |
Suzi hisses in a tightly-controlled whisper. |
| Suzi Croft: | She's getting more and more pregnant every day! Soon the baby will be showing. What'll she do then? Sell her services as a kinky little treat for some businessman? |
| Liz Rawton: | By that stage, they won't know how she got that way! I mean, I can't exactly see this place as being overly cautious! They'll take better care of her than we ever could! |
Suzi shakes her head angrily. |
| Suzi Croft: | Before she came here, she was a virgin! That bastard Wild Cat began to rip away at her dignity and now you're intending to finish the job for him! |
| Liz Rawton: | What makes you so sure she'll be safe where we are anyway? Once they find out about the pregnancy, who knows what they'll do to her! That's if she doesnt contract some infection or die of malnutrition along the way! |
Suzi is weakening, though she still maintains a horrified composure. |
| Suzi Croft: | But Liz, a prostitute! You know what happens to women who choose that lifestyle in England and the consequences here in Russia would be about ten times worse. |
| Liz Rawton: | Can you honestly compare our lifestyles with home anymore? |
Suzi pauses. |
| Suzi Croft: | No, but one prostitute is much the same as another, no matter what country you're in! |
| Liz Rawton: | You think we're not all theoretical prostitutes back there anyway! The difference is, she'll be better looked after here. She be well fed and clothed, and chances are she'll physically live through the next six months! Otherwise, who knows! |
Suzi looks downcast. |
| Suzi Croft: | But prostitution Liz? Is there no other way? |
| Liz Rawton: | You'd think I'd suggest it if I thought there was, Suzi? We've seen what things are like at the camp and Donna wasn't the first, believe me. Is it worth the risk? |
Suzi nods slowly. |
| Suzi Croft: | I guess you're right, with two lives at risk, not just one. Hopefully they will treat her with more respect as a pregnant woman. But how do we go about convincing her? Polly isn't going to like this one bit! |
Liz sighs. |
| Liz Rawton: | I don't know, but you'd have a better chance of convincing her. She looks up to you. |
Suzis jaw drops. |
| Suzi Croft: | You want me to talk to Polly about it? |
| Liz Rawton: | If anyone has a hope of convincing her, it's you. |
Suzi nods her head reluctantly. |
| Suzi Croft: | I guess so. Are you sure we're doing the right thing Liz? |
| Liz Rawton: | I wouldn't say there is a right thing. But I honestly think it's the best thing. |
Suzi takes a deep breath. |
| Suzi Croft: | I hope this works. |
Suzi and Liz slowly sidle over towards Polly with grimly determined looks on their faces. Liz nods as Cathy makes her way back over to another group of women. |
| Polly Page: | God, how much longer are we stuck here, this is ridiculous! |
Suzi allows a small smile to pass her lips. |
| Suzi Croft: | I know it is, Polly, and that's what we've come to talk to you about. |
Polly looks mortified. |
| Polly Page: | You have? Oh, don't tell me one of you is thinking about it? Suzi? Liz? You, you can't! |
Suzi looks to Liz for support. She takes a deep breath. |
| Liz Rawton: | Well Polly, we were talking about it, yes. It doesnt seem all that bad really. I mean, great conditions and all. |
| Suzi Croft: | And you've got the baby to think about too! |
Polly looks extremely objectionable. |
| Polly Page: | Me! |
Suzi nods unhappily. Polly looks as if she's going to melt into the floor, looking from both women in disbelief. |
| Suzi Croft: | It's for the best, you realise Polly. You can't put pride ahead of safety. |
| Polly Page: | But you, you said, I mean, me? |
| Suzi Croft: | Yes you, Polly. Have you thought about it? |
Polly's voice remains very high pitched and horrified. |
| Polly Page: | Me, but, I, me? Work in a place like this! I, I'd rather die! |
Liz sighs. |
| Liz Rawton: | That might just be an option, Poll. I mean, our current living conditions aren't exactly state-of-the-art, now are they? And with the baby, it'll just make things tens times more difficult for you. Besides, we dont know what'll happen once the guards find out. Donna wasn't the first you know. |
Polly looks as if she's gonna pass out. |
| Polly Page: | You mean, they'd kill me? All because that bastard got me pregnant in the first place! |
Polly bursts into tears, Suzi trying to console her. |
| Suzi Croft: | We have to consider every possibility, Polly. Life here isn't safe and this opportunity offers you just what you need. A bit of safety! |
Polly calms down, although still very hesitant. |
| Polly Page: | But, they expect us to go along with stuff here. |
Suzi nods slowly. |
| Suzi Croft: | Unfortunately, yes Polly. But it's a small sacrifice to make, all things considered. |
Polly looks away miserably. |
| Suzi Croft: | Polly, you need to decide quickly. You can't just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away! |
Suzi crosses her arms in a feminine way. Polly lowers her head, chewing on her lower lip. |
| Polly Page: | You two think I should? |
| Suzi Croft: | Well what's the alternative? Going back to Wild Cat? |
Polly cringes, remembering the conditions of the camp, the nightly 'visits'. |
| Polly Page: | I dont really have a choice, do I? |
Suzi shakes her head. |
| Suzi Croft: | It's for the best Polly. The best for you and the best for your baby. |
Liz places an arm around Polly's shoulder. |
| Liz Rawton: | Suzi's right. I mean, at least you're assured of surviving here. |
Polly frowns, looking Suzi in the eye. |
| Polly Page: | Well if it's so terrific, why aren't the pair of you staying? |
Suzi bites her lip. |
| Suzi Croft: | Because we're not as young and naive as you are. And we're not pregnant! Besides, I have to run the clinic. |
| Liz Rawton: | I've only ever been taken the once, and well someone's gota be around to help all the new ones out. |
Suzi turns to Liz. |
| Suzi Croft: | Exactly. But you serve no useful purpose back at the camp. To be blunt, Polly, you're redundant. |
Polly glares down at Suzi. |
| Polly Page: | Fine, I don't care anyway. |
| Suzi Croft: | Exactly, you're better out of the way where you can't mess everything up. We don't need you, and a pregnant woman would only make things more difficult for the rest of us. |
Liz brushes Suzi's arm. |
| Liz Rawton: | Calm down Suzi, it's up to Polly. |
Liz pauses. |
| Liz Rawton: | You know how we feel. We only want what's best for you. |
| Suzi Croft: | It is up to you, Polly. But we don't want to have to put up with you for the next six months if there's an alternative. |
Liz nods slowly. |
| Liz Rawton: | It's what's best for you. |
Suzi and Liz look expectantly at Polly. Polly looks around the room nervously, as Vicky and Sally huddle together excitedly. Turning back to Liz and Suzi, Polly nods slowly, sniffling back tears. |
| Polly Page: | I guess so. |
Suzi nods her head slowly. |
| Suzi Croft: | Are you sure? Tell me you're 100 percent sure. |
Polly growls back at Suzi quickly. |
| Polly Page: | I'll do it! |
| Suzi Croft: | Good. |
Suzi and Liz watch as a miserable Polly wanders off to sit by herself in the corner. Liz stares in shock at Suzi. |
| Liz Rawton: | Just what the hell was all that about? |
Suzi looks up at Liz. |
| Suzi Croft: | You wanted me to convince her to go along with this didn't you? |
| Liz Rawton: | Well yeah, but did you have to make her feel so, alone? |
Suzi shrugs. |
| Suzi Croft: | It was the only way. And I knew you wouldn't have had the bottle to do it so I had to. She'll be safe here, away from the clutches of Wild Cat. |
| Liz Rawton: | Yeah, but you didn't have to scare the poor girl into thinking that we didn't care. That she didn't have a friend in the world! |
| Suzi Croft: | The ends justify the means, Liz. All that matters is that Polly's warm and safe. If you were a real friend of hers, you'd see that. |
Suzi stares into Liz's eyes, daring her to question that. |
| Liz Rawton: | I do see that, but it's important that she makes this decision because she thinks it's the right one, not because she sees it as the only option. |
Suzi rolls her eyes. |
| Suzi Croft: | Do you think I enjoyed that? Treating one of my friends like she means nothing to me? I did it because it was necessary. |
Suzi is cut off as the Russian guard re-enters the room. |
| Russian Guard: | It is time to decide, women. Do you wish to stay and be treated like queens or return to camp and continue to live like the sluts that you are? |
The guard looks around the room and taps his clipboard impatiently. Vicky smiles proudly as she and Sally line up in the doorway. |
| Russian Guard: | Very well, do you wish to be accepted? |
The guard looks interestedly at the two women and licks his dry lips. |
| Vicky Hagen: | Oh yes. We've had enough of that rat hole for a lifetime! |
The guard nods enthusiastically. |
| Russian Guard: | You will be most welcome. Anyone else? |
Suzi nudges Polly in the back. |
| Suzi Croft: | Go on. |
Polly looks nervously back at Liz and Sally before walking slowly over to Sally and Vicky. Suzi gives Polly a small wave then turns away. Vicky notices Polly next to her and chuckles lightly. |
| Vicky Hagen: | Oh, charming. Look Sals, it's the ice princess! |
Norika and Cathy look seriously concerned by this turn of events. |
| Norika Datta: | Polly? What are you doing? |
Polly turns her head towards Norika, remaining silent. |
| Norika Datta: | For God's sake Polly, get a grip on yourself! |
Liz steps forward, grabbing Norika by the elbow. Norika hisses to Liz. |
| Norika Datta: | What the hell is going on here? |
Liz whispers in a very low tone, as she pulls Norika back. |
| Liz Rawton: | She knows what she's doing. |
The guard narrows his eyebrows. |
| Russian Guard: | Silence! You either come or go, there is no need to discuss it. |
Norika withdraws, shaking her head and looking daggers at Liz. Michelle Hughes hugs a group of friends before pacing across the room also, joining the three women. The guard looks around the room one last time. |
| Russian Guard: | Good. You are foolish to refuse, as you will not have an opportunity like this again for a long time. |
The guard snaps his feet to attention and speaks in a harsh, military voice. |
| Russian Guard: | Women, march! You must leave the building and return to the van. |
The guard stands back with Polly, Sally, Vicky and Michelle as the other women slowly begin to trickle out of the room. Suzi looks back over her shoulder as she approaches the door. She gives Polly one last, sad smile. Polly's eyes fill up with tears as she looks from Vicky to Suzi before racing back across the room and into Suzi's arms, crying her eyes out. |
| Polly Page: | I can't go through with it, I can't! |
Suzi sighs and smoothes Polly's hair down. |
| Suzi Croft: | Sshhh, shush, it's okay Polly. I understand. |
