** APRIL 21ST - 2001 **

*** CID OFFICE - SUN HILL POLICE STATION***

Tom stands next to Kerry, as the six uniformed officers make their way into the CID office.
DI Deakin: Right, you lot know that you have been given to us for the duration of this obbo?
Polly and the other officers nod.
DI Deakin: Right, we have been asked to help the screws at Shadwell prison. Apparently the use of heroin and other drugs has tripled over the past two years. This all came to head with the third OD in custody within the last two months. Now I believe that some of you are familiar with Bill Garrett? Well his screws believe he has progressed to class A's from electronics. I mean, there isn't much of a demand for RAM chips where he is. Now the screws so far have found nothing on him and haven't been able to prove his connection to the drugs in any way. He always has been able to cover his tracks well. Now here is our bit. We have to find out a few things: firstly, how he is involved and secondly, how he gets the drugs inside. Any Questions?
Polly glances across at Vicky, raising an eyebrow.
PC Hagen: How sir?
  Vicky smiles.
DI Deakin: Well that is the fun bit. I'll be asking one of you to go undercover as a visitor for one of the inmates, an ex-snout of mine Peter Way. The person who goes undercover will be looking for any particularly suspicious visitors, especially associated with Garrett. Hopefully, if the screws are right, the gear is coming in through visitors, rather than bent staff.
PC Hagen: And then?
DI Deakin: Then Vicky, we follow them back from whence they came and hopefully come up with the supplier and the supplies if we are lucky. That is why we need you and Tony as drivers.
DI Deakin: Tom and Kerry will be heading the formal investigation too. Is there anything you would like to add?
DC Proctor: No, guv.
  Tom looks across at Kerry.
DI Deakin: Right then. Anything else before we get started? We preferably need Vicky as a driver, so Polly or Cass? Who would be interested in going undercover?
  Polly hesitates, before speaking up.
PC Page: Sir, It'll have to be Cass. Garrett will recognise me.
  Chris is confused
DI Deakin: Polly?
PC Page: Sir, Bill Garrett knows I'm a copper.
Chris looks slightly confused but doesn't push the issue.
DI Deakin: Oh, yes I see. Well I'll have you in pursuit with Tony and that leaves Cass to do the visit and Vicky, Sam and Gary in the other vehicle.
PC Page: Right sir.
DI Deakin: So, Kerry if you could brief Cass on Peter Way and what to look out for, Tom can let the others know what they will be doing. I don't have to remind you that this is a big budget op and the last thing I need is a distinct lack of result. So you can all get into your civvies and good luck. We all need a result here!
Uniform make their way back downstairs and towards the locker rooms.
PC Harker: So Vicky, you up for this? Personally, I don't fancy being at CID's beckoned call, despite the overtime.
PC Hagen: Well, the money is nice, but I can't stand the way that, that Kerry Holmes smirks down her nose at us!
PC Page: Ah, I know what ya mean there.
PC Stamp: We are just a bunch of stupid plods to them!
PC Hagen: Speak for yourself Tone!
PC Stamp: Cheers Vick!
  Vicky smirks
PC Hagen: Well best get changed, cast off the trusty uniform for a few days at least.
Vicky enters female locker rooms as Sam enters the PC's locker room, leaving Polly and Tony in the corridor.
PC Stamp: What's up Poll? Not looking forward to spending the next few days living life the CID way? Sitting in cars and thinking about how clever we are.
Tony laughs at his own joke.
PC Page: Nah, just, well, thought I'd seen the last of Garrett that's all.
PC Stamp: Don't worry about him Poll, I doubt you'll even have to see him. Especially if he is behind all of this!
PC Page: Yeah, I guess.
PC Stamp: I doubt that it will pose a problem Poll. Don't let it get you down!
PC Page: You're right.
Polly heads into the locker room after Vicky.

*** SHADWELL MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON - 7:30 AM ***

Way motions to Cass to observe Garrett who is holding hands with the woman visitor.
Peter Way: I don't get too many visitors. It is good to see my cousin again after so long! You've grown!
PC Rickman: Yeah, I'm sorry, I meant to come sooner. I've been busy.
Cass pauses. Way indicates to the prisoner on his left, a bearded man.
Peter Way: He's had six different girls visit him in the last few weeks. Lucky.
PC Rickman: Yeah, how does it work?
Peter Way: Well I dunno, I'm not in with his group. I'm only doing this coz your Mr Deakin is going to cut me a deal. If they ever found out what I was up to I'd be a dead man!
PC Rickman: I realise that, but you know we'll do this quietly.
Peter Way: I have heard on the grapevine that Garrett is top dog, but you only really know the ins and outs if you are one of his cronies. In this place, the fewer people that know what is going on the safer you are. I don't think it is a screw helping him out, you saw how strict they are!
PC Rickman: Yes, don't worry, we'll get to the bottom of this. With your help.
Peter Way: I don't know how they are getting the stuff in, but they are, and those women have something to do with it. Do you think I'll get a reduced sentence? I mean, if Deakin gets his result?
PC Rickman: I'm not able to comment on that. We'll do what we can though, we appreciate your help on this.
Peter Way: Any time, I mean Garrett has made my life hell. I'm supposed to be in here six more months, he roughed me up on my first day here, just because I left some cassettes on the floor in the room!
  Cass raises an eyebrow.
PC Rickman: He likes throwing his weight around, eh?
Peter Way: Lets just say that if this either helps me, or sends him down further it will have been worth it!
Way motions to Cass to observe Garrett who is holding hands with the woman visitor.
Peter Way: I'd swear she has something up her sleeve or something like that.
Cass looks across the room slowly.
PC Rickman: Yeah, I'm surprised the screws don't notice it.
Peter Way: I reckon they change how they actually pass the gear on, but its not really that obvious, I mean if you aren't really looking, or if it hasn't been pointed out.
PC Rickman: How does he move it around inside?
Peter Way: As I said, I really wouldn't know, but my guess is that the best way to do it and not get caught would be to use other prisoners as distributors, they probably have stashed in small amounts all over the place. Then if you are busted it ain't for much and you have plenty more where it came from.
PC Rickman: Right. Thanks for your help. I'll be back to visit soon.
Cass stands from the table and exits the room.
Peter Way: Seeya cuz!

*** CANTEEN - SUN HILL POLICE STATION - 3:50 PM ***

Polly and Vicky are finishing refs when Reg makes his way over to them.
PC Hagen: I mean, there must be some sort of connection, we followed three of the women back to the same estate!
PC Page: Wouldn't surprise me.
PC Hagen: I bet it is some sort of ring, I guess we will find out more at the next briefing.
PC Page: Yeah.
PC Hagen: You want something Reg?
PC Hollis: Ah, Polly, there's a woman to see you in front office.
  Vicky raises her eyebrow.
PC Page: Right, you finish there, we're due back out.
Polly stands and waits for Vicky to clear up, the pair then making their way to the foyer. Vicky stops short as she sees who is waiting at the front desk
PC Page: Emma?
Emma Roberts: Polly, I'm so glad to see you, I had meaning to get in touch for simply ages, my counsellor thought it was for the best, you know to clear the air
  Vicky 's jaw drops
PC Hagen: Clear the air?
Emma Roberts: Oh, hi Vicky! Yes my therapist thought that I should speak to Polly to clear things up with her.
Polly is looking very confused, glancing from Emma to Vicky.
PC Hagen: What the hell are you thinking! You really are mad! Clear the air? As I remember, the last time you tried to do that you nearly killed the wife of one of my colleagues! Get Out!
  Emma stutters
PC Page: Look, it's ok Vicky. Come through here.
Polly leads Emma through to the front room.
Emma Roberts: I'm sorry, I know what this must look like, but I really have been 'cured' if you like.
  Vicky looks after them, gobsmacked

*** FRONT INTERVIEW ROOM ***

Polly closes the door behind them, still trying to get over the shock.
PC Page: What are you doing here?
Emma Roberts: As I said Polly, I really did come to apologise, to you, I have had a lot of help and I have only just realised what kind of position I have put you in. I really am sorry
  Polly pauses, speaking matter-of-factly.
PC Page: Right, well glad to hear it.
  Polly crosses her arms.
Emma Roberts: Is that all you have to say to me? That you are glad to hear it? Polly it is such a relief to see you again, I mean I have been in a place for, well mad people. You are the only one who ever took me seriously.
PC Page: Emma, yes, I'm glad to hear it.
Emma begins to shake her head. Polly sighs, her expression remaining fixed.
Emma Roberts: I don't think you understand me Polly, I have really missed you, I mean after Brian, you supported me, I, I thought we could be friends?
  Polly looks away.
PC Page: You've said what you wanted to say.
Emma Roberts: What? You want me to go? I, I thought.
PC Page: You thought wrong. I think you need to leave.
Emma Roberts: You have changed Polly, I thought I could count on your support, I thought you weren't like the others. I, I thought you were special! I don't want to leave you Polly, I have changed, really, I have!
PC Page: Why did you come here?
Emma Roberts: To apologise to you Polly, I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to hurt anybody!
Polly raises an eyebrow in disbelief.
PC Page: That it?
Emma Roberts: I, I missed you.
PC Page: I think you should leave.
  Emma moves towards the door.
Emma Roberts: We had something special, Polly. You are going to regret losing me.
Emma sighs and walks out. Polly shakes her head, and takes a deep breath before making her way out to Vicky.
PC Hagen: What was all that about?
PC Page: Nothing. She just wanted to tell me she's sorted herself out, that's all.
PC Hagen: Sorted herself out? She's mad to turn up here, What if Dave had seen her?
PC Page: Look, no-one need know about it, had they?
PC Hagen: No, but it must have taken her some bottle to walk in here like that. I thought she would be well and truly in Newington by now!
PC Page: Obviously not.
PC Hagen: Yeah, obviously.
PC Page: Look, just forget it, yeah? Come in, CID'll be waiting.
Vicky mutters "mad cow" under her breath, before following Polly into the briefing room.

*** BRIEFING ROOM - 4:05 PM ***

Chris sees the last two people for the briefing enter the room.
DI Deakin: Ahhh. Glad to see that you could make it girls. Well we haven't had many leads on the case other than the fact that Kerry found out that two of the three girls followed back to the Cockcroft estate, Jody Farmer and Marie Wilkins have form for soliciting off Bream street. We were thinking that we will send Vicky, Polly and Cass posing as Toms into the area to see what they can get from the locals, and if possible to try and make contact with the Toms.
Cass raises an eyebrow at Polly and Vicky. Vicky smirks
DI Deakin: Anyway, we don't want to waste time briefing you when you can be out there, so if you work on character for a bit, you will need aliases, then we can get you out there straight away!
Polly glances over at Vicky with a cheeky grin.
DI Deakin: We will have you there under the impression that your pimp Marty Briggs has just been banged up.
  Chris hands out Brigg's dossier.
DI Deakin: So read through this and you should be able to fend off any questions aimed at you
Polly takes the sheet from Deakin, glancing over it before passing it to Vicky.
DI Deakin: Any further questions?
PC Hagen: Erm, Sir, what if someone tries to, you know, pick us up?
DI Deakin: Well, I'm sure you all have experience in fending off unwanted attention. A 'get stuffed' usually does the trick.
PC Rickman: And if that fails, there's always the swift knee to the crotch method.
  Cass chuckles.
PC Hagen: Don't know how well that will go down with the punters Cass!
DI Deakin: For the aliases, keep it on a first name basis, then perhaps you will be less likely to slip up and give the game away. If you can all choose a last name, preferably something easy for the others to remember, we shouldn't have a problem.
DI Deakin: If that is all, I'll leave you to it. You will be under surveillance the whole time by the lads, who we will have posing as punters whenever we need to get messages to you.
PC Rickman: Right Sir.
Polly nods as Deakin makes his way out of the room. Vicky looks at the others in the room and starts laughing.

*** WPC'S LOCKER ROOM FOLLOWING MORNING - 9:10 AM ***

PC Hagen: I don't know how we are going to pull this one off!
PC Page: I dunno, I don't reckon you'll have any trouble convincing someone you're a Tom.
Polly sighs, opens her locker and applies the dark red lipstick to her lips.
PC Hagen: Oh cheers Polly!
Vicky pulls a face at Cass and mouths 'PMT'.
PC Hagen: Gaw'd, I can't even bend over in this skirt!
PC Rickman: Let's just hope we won't have to, eh!
  Vicky laughs.
PC Hagen: So d you think this will work? I mean Toms aren't exactly bending over backwards to be friends now are they?
PC Rickman: Nah, you're right. Oh well, we'll just have to charm 'em, yeah?
PC Hagen: I guess, but some of us seem to be little less than charming this morning. What's up Poll?
Polly turns suddenly, smudging her mascara.
PC Page: Darn! What are you babbling about Vicks?
Polly reaches for a tissue and finishes off her make-up.
PC Hagen: You have hardly said a word this morning. This is an obbo that we are going to, not a funeral!
PC Page: Oh, hilarious Vicky. Just leave it, will ya!
Vicky raises her eyebrows and turns back to he locker.
PC Hagen: Well, if you are going to be like that, I can see that this isn't going to makes things any easier for us.
PC Page: Whatever.
Polly grabs her bag, shuts her locker and proceeds out towards the corridor.
PC Page: You coming?
PC Hagen: Yeah hold your horses!
  Cass whispers to Vicky.
PC Rickman: What is up with her?
PC Hagen: It's hardly going to be man trouble is it?
  Vicky laughs under her breath.
