Super Summer 2003
Super Summer was amazing! Though it was my first year, some that have gone more than once have informed me that this year was one of the best! Teressa Johnston (Super Summer Secretary) said that in the 17 years she has worked Super Summer only two speakers have got a standing ovation at the end...and this year was one of them.
Walter Nusbaum was the greatest speaker I have ever heard. He broadened my view on almost everything dealing with my faith. Maple Street, the guest worship band, was spectacular! They mixed together contemporary songs (including "You Said" by Shane Bernard and "It is You" by the Newsboys) and traditional hymns ("When I Survey") to make it a refreshing and beautiful worship experience.
I attended Week One. But through both weeks, the bunks were filled everywhere until just 4 beds were unused...and that is with counsellors sleeping on the couches in the apartments. It was packed full... Week One had approximately 1200 students from all over Oklahoma!
In case you didn't know, Super Summer is run by the youth pastors of Oklahoma. The unique concept of division by grades allows a more age-specified study so they can focus more on pressing issues impacting that group because obviously Seniors and eighth graders do not go through most of the same things.
There are seven schools:
Red (8th), Blue (9th), Orange (10th), Yellow (11th), Green (12th), Silver (graduates), and Purple (Ministry). The HS schools were divided into at least two schools. For instance, there was Red One and Red Two, Blue One and Blue Two, etc. Yellow had three schools and Silver and Purple only had one.
Super Summer is an exclusively Christian camp. Students are not allowed to leave the campus or order pizza deliver because the Exec Staff at Super Summer requires a strict screening system for attendees. This assures that the atmosphere will be solely Christian and that the leaders of Oklahoma's youth groups can be focused on God's moving rather than on worldly things. This is what sets Super Summer apart from other "church camps" like Falls Creek or Camp Life.
Super Summer focuses on pressing topics of today's youth and in the strengthening of their faith. The family groups of Super Summer allow a small group atmosphere where students of the same grade that don't know each other can get to know each other better and talk about issues they have talked about in large group or whatever else they want to discuss. Family groups are the revolutionizing factor (in my opinion) of Super Summer. A majority of the time at Super Summer is spent in these family groups so when you leave, you don't want to leave your family group behind. At first, because you don't know any of them, you think, "How am I going to live this week with these people?" At the end of the week, you think, "How am I going to live the rest of my life withOUT these people?"

All in all, Super Summer was the greatest week of my life thus far. For more on Super Summer, visit
