Highways of Gold

Highways of gold
Murky shadows against the trees
Glittering with apples
Scattered with snakes
Cars past
Worlds end
Everyone stops
And goes again
Minds wander
Minds lost
Minds questioning
What's yet to come
What they have planned
What they want to do
Highways of gold
Were paved by us
But look closer
It's now just shiny rust
Waiting to crumble
Or to be paved again.

Note: This was a case of frantic touch-typing, not only did I not reread it, I have no idea where it came from or what I was thinking or the poem's meaning when I typed this out on Notepad. Dated 5 June '00.
