Theodore J. Roosevelt was born onOct. 27, 1858, in New York City. He was educated at Harvard College where he studied Law and graduated in 1880. During his life he gained the nicknames: "TR"; "Trust-Buster"; and "Teddy". His professional career consisted of occupations as an Author, a Lawyer, and a Public Official before becoming President. He married Alice Hathaway Lee on Oct. 27, 1880; but she died some four years later. He then remarried to Edith Kermit Carow on Dec. 2, 1886. He had one child with his first wife Alice and then had five children with Edith, his second wife. He was the twenty-sixth president of the United States and was elected in 1901 as a republican and satyed in office until 1909. He died on Jan. 6, 1919, in Oyster Bay, N.Y.

Roosevelt was one of the most popular, controversial, and important presidents. He greatly expanded presidential power while making the United States the virtual guardian of the Western Hemisphere and a major force in European and Far Eastern affairs. He understood and reacted constructively to the technological revolution and the rise of a nationwide system of commerce and industry. He increased regulation of business, encouraged the growth of labor unions, and stimulated the rise of the welfare state. He also dramatized the need to conserve natural resources, and his policies advanced the cause of conservation.
