Where to Stay
I personally think that it is the most fun to stay at any of the onsite Disneyworld resorts, even the least expensive ones. The less-expensive Music, Sports, Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans and Dixie Landings are perfectly comfortable. The primary difference is that they are spread out and have a centrally-located food court. You will go for a little stroll from your room when you want to get something to eat. The pools and Disney ambience do lend themselves to the total Disney experience. Transportation between all resorts and all "worlds" is free.
If you are staying offsite, there are many good hotels and motels in the area to choose from. You do not have to stay at an expensive hotel. Since you may well be spending your entire time at Disneyworld, it may not be important to have a luxury room and amenities. Do know that if you are considering a hotel that is "right outside the gates of Disney" that you will NOT be walking from your room to Disney unless you are into cross-country hiking. It is a good 5 minute drive from the "gates" to the parking lot of the world you are visiting - and then there is a shuttle from the parking lot to the actual entrance. Wheels are a necessity. Parking at any world is only $6 and the parking permit will work for any park that day if you choose to move around.
