RES Histroy

Red Eared Sliders (RES) begin becoming pets in the 1960's. Due to little knowledge, many pet RES died. It is now illegal in the U.S. for pet stores to sell turtles less than 4 inches in length. This is because many children put the turtles into their mouth and become sick. But it is legal to keep turtle under 4 inches.

When wild turtles are caught and sold in pet stores, the turtles are under stress. The stress can cause protozoan and bacterial infections and Salmonella.

In nature, RES dwell in rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams. They perfer warm habitats with slow-moving water with mud bottoms. They like to bask on logs and rocks. Baby RES bask by holding on marsh weeds and other aquatic plants. RES can be found in the southern U.S. The reason why they are call "sliders" is because when they are scared, they would slide into the water from rocks, logs, bank of rivers, etc.
