Planet Slider - Food & Feeding

..::Food and Feeding::..

There is so many food you can feed to your pet turtle. Since they're are young, they're mostly carnivorous. They won't eat vegetables or fruits as much as adult turtles, but that didnt means you can't try. Turtles of any age must need vegetables and fruits because they provide vitamins, nutrients, and many other health benfits.

What you might be feeding your turtle now is pellets, or commercial food. I suggest that your turtle have a diet of vegetables and fruits, animal, and commercial food. You should follow this diet plan for baby turtles:

Vegetarian food: 10-15% Animal food: 30-35% Commercial food: 30-35%

Keep in mind that your turlte can make a mess while eating. Also they must be in the water for they can not shallow food and doesn't have savlia. A good way to prevent a messy tank is a separate tank or container. Make sure the temperature of the water is same or a little higher than the tank water.

Turtles can get obese so make sure you don't overfeed. Obesity can be cause by fatty food. It can also be caused by little amout of exercise.

Baby turtles can go a week without food. How much and how often should you feed your baby turtles? Feed the turtle as much food as would fit in its head and neck. Another way is to feed them as much as they will eat in a few minutes. Since they are babies, you must feed them at least once a day. When they become 1 year old or older, you can feed them 3 or 2 times a week. I recommend you feed them a good amout of food if you decided to feed 2 times a week. Your turtle might be begging for food everytime you go near it. This is normal and it will always be like that. That's doesnt means it is hungry.

This is the list of food you can feed to your turtle. Make sure you slice or chop them into tiny peices smaller than their mouth.

Veggie

Lettuce, Squash, Carrot, Tomatoes, Aquatic plants, Mustard leaves

Fruits

Strawberry, Apple, Water Melon (rare treat), Banana, Grapes, Papaya, Mango, Tomatoes

Live Food

Aquatic snails, Fish (like goldfish, guppies, etc), Shrimps, Crickets, Worms, Insect

Food you should NOT feed

No raw chicken and meat.

Getting calcium is very important to your turtle. One good source to get calcium is cuttle bone. Cuttle bones are sold in most pet stores since they can also provide calcium for birds. Providing Vitamin A is also important. One source for Vitamin A is carrot.

Q:My turtle is not eating.

A:Are you feeding veggies or fruits? Remember, baby turtles are more carnivorous. Also make sure your turtle tank water temperature is warm. Turtle will not eat if the water temperature is too cold. If it is not eating and you expect something is wrong, take it to a vet.

A:If your turtle is obese, try feeding less meaty food and try to feed fruit and veggies. Also try to feed less pellets. Make sure the tank is large so there is more room for the turtle to swim and get exercise.

Q:I just got a new turtle and it's not eating

Please understand that the turtle is stressed out from begin moved to a new place. Allow them to get used to their new surrounding. You can try putting 1-3 pellets in its habitat each day until they eat.
