Hazrat Khawaja Nizamuddin Aulia was one of the most renowned and highly respected Sufi
saints of India, who is also known by his title of Mehboobe Elahi (Beloved of God). Hazrat
Nizamuddin Aulias grand parents had migrated from Bukhara to India during the reign of Sultan Shamsuddin Al-Tamish.After a short stay in Lahore; they shifted to Badaiyun in U.P.(India) where they settled down permanently. Hazrat Khawaja Ahmed Bukhari, father of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, was married to Hazrat Bibi Zuleikha at Badaiyun, where Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia was born on Wednesday the 27th of Safar, 636, Hijri (about eight - centuries ago), Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia lived permanently in Delhi after the death of his parents. He died on 18th of Rabiussani(Rabiul Akhir) in 725th Hijri at Delhi. In his lifetime of about 90 years, Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia had seen the reign of about seven emperors of India i.e.(1) Ghayasuddin Balban, (2) Sultan Mueezuddin Keqabad, (3) Sultan Jalaluddin Khilji, (4) Sultan Alauddin Khilji, (5) Qutabuddin Khilji, (6) Ghayasuddin Tughlak and (7) Mohammed Bin Tughlak. While some of them were his devout disciples, others showed a hostile attitude. He did not like to meet any king of his time; he had always kept himself away from the politics of kings court. He never cared to seek any patronage or help from even the mightiest of the rulers. Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia has said," A Sufi must never go to the courts of Kings and must refuse to accept any kind of rewards or gratifications for his maintenance." He had fully devoted his whole life in the worship of God and for the welfare of mankind. But after his death, the Kings, Princes, Ameers, Presidents, Prime Ministers not only from inside India but from abroad also, had started visiting his holy shrine (Dargah) in order to pay tributes to the saint and to seek spiritual and temporal blessings. His holy shrine at Delhi has become an object of veneration not only for 250 millions Muslim population of the country but also for other people of different faiths and religions. The area is named after the saint and the sacred shrine is an important Muslim pilgrim centre. People treat the shrine with reverence and deep respect.
