Book Club Report
Julia Schaun, Pine Oaks Book Club Co-Chair

Greetings

Its Julia again.  I know this was supposed to be Barbaras turn (again), but since she got elected Board President, I guess Ill step up to the plate (sorry, just a little book humor).  And congratulations to Barbara on her victory.  I hope she doesnt get so busy she forgets about her little old book club, or at least lets me pick a different co-chair.

We had a very interesting discussion last month about a certain Samuel R. Mainefellowe.  Who knew the late 1700s and early 1800s were such an exciting time!  I found the section on the letters he wrote to his various mistresses particularly interesting.  Nowadays I can hardly find the time to even e-mail people I know who live in different cities, let alone write with a quill, or whatever it was they did.

Book Club members and any prospective members should take note that were back to our regularly scheduled time this month.  The meeting will be at our new Presidents house, and Im also going to lead the discussion.  This month were reading The Pumpkin Harvest, a coming of age tale told from the perspective of a farmwife who watches her family grow up and sadly, grow apart.

Id also like to extend a special invitation to our newest resident, Liz Jeffs.  Feel free to drop by.  Adding your perspective would be so interesting!  Plus, it would mean less talking from Terry.

Yours in reading,

First of all, Id like to address some comments Ive received about last months column.  Grooveasaurus Tex did not play a gig at Als House of Fireworks and Flammable Pajamas.  That was a joke on my part.  Als has never been a concert venue, although there appears to be a Boxcar Willie of some sort who occasionally plays a broken accordion.  Its rather sad (though oddly poignant).

And speaking of rather sad, what was with that Vidalia onion sale?  How can you, the good people of Pine Oaks, claim to support your local high school when you only buy two dozen onions?  And not just any onions, Vidalia onions!  You can eat them like apples!  Maybe next time well just sell actual apples.

And speaking of our symphonic band, their winter concert is coming up.  On the program will be Appalachian Fanfare and an Emerson, Lake and Palmer medley, followed by more holiday-themed songs such as Those Jazzy Jingle Bells, The Traditions We Share, and of course, Sleigh Ride.  Its sure to be a holiday-tastic time.

Finally, Id like to take this opportunity to announce my candidacy for the Neighborhood Board.  Its high time there was a youth representative on the board, and I know that if elected, I will proudly serve the youth of Pine Oaks well.

So go Fighting Van Burens, and enjoy that winter break!
