Book Club Report
Julia Schaun, Pine Oaks Book Club Co-Chair

Hello

First let me begin by apologizing for last months outburst.  I cannot apologize for the way I feel, but I am sorry for offending anyone.  Its just that lately Ive been so frustrated by the lack of co-operation from anyone in helping make this Book Club a success.  Thankfully, some good has come of my little typed-up tantrum.

Barbara has graciously offered to take some time off from her campaign for Board President and assist more with book club scheduling and hosting.  And since shes hosting this month, I cant wait to eat her famous sausage-and-apple quiche.

Rosetta Davis has volunteered to lead the Book-tober discussion, and shes chosen Sue Graftons latest potboiler, S is for Something Crime-Related.  It sounds exciting, and I cant wait to read it.  So come on back to Book Club!  Were back at our regular night and time, so there should be no confusion.

And if anyone shows up on the wrong night and wont leave so help me I will take a burning log out of the fireplace and beat them with it.

Yours in reading,

Julia Schaun

Get excited!

Thats our slogan this year as the 1-1 Rt. 237 football team begins a three-game home stand in October, including our homecoming game on Friday, October 13.  Dont let the date scare you.  Come on out to George H. Candlemeyer Field and root for your Fighting Van Burens!  Rt. 237 has hit a rough patch with homecoming games recently, but I just know that if everyone in the community comes out wearing the school brown and gold, well overwhelm our opponents the Ambassadors.

Speaking of homecoming, Im proud to say that Ive been nominated for homecoming king this year.  Im very proud to have been nominated by my fellow classmates and if elected, will perform the required duties to the best of my abilities, up to and including sitting in one of the convertibles during halftime and waving to the stands.

And still speaking of homecoming, Im incredibly excited about this years dance.  In lieu of a DJ this year, weve invited Grooveasaurus Tex to come play.  And while some may be skeptical, Im sure there wont have a repeat of their last performance, when they accidentally burned parts of Candlemeyer Field and sent nearly two dozen people to the hospital.  After all, well be inside!  Cafeteria floors are slightly less flammable.

Finally, since this is October, the Rt. 237 junior class is sponsoring a haunted house to help pay for this years prom.  Its actually not really a haunted house per se, since its being held at the junior class presidents moms apartment.  Still, with stations like The Ghoulish Futon, The Bloody Kitchen/Dining Room/Foyer and a Ghost Walk down the hall to the laundry room, its sure to be a frightening experience!  And since all proceeds go towards this years prom, be sure to donate generously!  We dont want to end up in the banquet room of H. G. OGradys like they did last year.

Go Fighting Van Burens!
