Community Voices

Hello again.  Jim Stillman here.  Just thought Id check in with everyone.  You know, ever since I lost my re-election campaign for Community Board President, things have been, wellnot as sunny as one would hope.  First, I lost my wristwatch.  This wasnt too bad, but it served as an ominous omen fraught with portent for the coming months.  Stillmans Hardware experienced disappointing sales for our spring April Showerheads/May Flowerbeds sale, to the point where were still marking down Duke Sprinkles Mk. II showerheads to the point where you can get a handful of them for $7.99.  The flowerbed fertilizer however, remains  the wholesale price.

It got so bad that at one point, Ben Kingsley (not that Ben Kingsley) offered to buy out my store, but Ill have none of it.  Stillmans Hardware has a proud tradition to uphold, and Im not about to undermine it by giving in to gimmicky deals and a customer is always right mentality.  The customer isnt always right, thats why hes come into the hardware store looking for one of those metal rod things, you know, like you put over a window or door unit.  Its the salesman who should always be right, otherwise he wouldnt be a very good salesman.  I mean, if the customer was always correcting the salesman, its called a riding mower or if you do that, your septic tank will implode, then by all rights their roles should be reversed, shouldnt they?  But thats not the mentality youll find at The Other Ben Kingsleys.  If you want a set of woodscrews, but you ask for three yards of wire mesh, the salesmans not going to correct you, and youll have to figure out how to use that mesh to strengthen your joints and apply hinges.

And so I persevere.  Please remember to shop Stillmans.  Ill get by, dont worry about me, but in the meantime, until things pick up, I do ask that you keep me in mind the next time youre looking to purchase anything for your bathroom, kitchen, side addition, toolshed or third attic.  If I sound disparate, I assure you its only because thats a typo, and Im really quite desperate.

Greetings, residents of Pine Oaks. Allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Sally Lellwiss-Budge, and Im the outgoing Junior Class President at Rt. 237 High School.  Im taking over for Marcus Eddy, who graduated last month.  Id like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you, the good people of Pine Oaks.

First, as I stated at the outset, I am the outgoing president of the Junior Class.  Ive been a class officer each of the past three years, first Freshman Vice President, then Secretary-Treasurer of the Sophomore Class, and finally my current office.  I will also be running for Senior Class President in the fall, and I have to say, in all modesty, I like my chances.

I am also a member and second chair trumpet of the Rt. 237 Fighting Van Burens Marching Van Burens Marching Band, and next year I plan on trying out for assistant drum major.  Again, I have to say in all modesty that I like the odds there.

Finally, this past year I joined the Rt. 237 High School Academicians Team.  This fall we hope to make it to the state championships, and in all modesty, I have to say that I like our chances.

I hope to continue to provide the same amount of information, fun and info-fun as Marcus has, though not necessarily in that order.  And, if any Pine Oaks resident has any questions or concerns about Rt. 237 High School activities, please dont hesitate to let me know.
