Community Voices

Hi folks.  Jeremy Mendes here.  You may now me as the lead singer/songwriter and second rhythm guitarist for local band Grooveasaurus Tex.  First off, I want to thank everyone in Pine Oaks whos supported us over the last six years by coming our to our shows.  Everyone in the band really appreciates it, and we couldnt be the band we are without all of you.

Secondly, and the reason Im writing this column, Id like to apologize for burning so many of you in horrible fires.  Now I know that saying Im sorry wont heal your second-degree burns or pay your mounting hospital bills, but the guys and I got to talking, and we felt like someone should address this issue.  And, since I write 85 percent of the bands lyrics, we decided I should be the one to do it.

Im sorry.  We Grooveasaurus Tex are sorry.  We never intended to cause any of those fires, all three of them, with our live performances.  Certainly a lot of bands would like to burn the house down on any given night, but this is taking it too far!  I mean, theres on fire, and theres on fire!  Most bands try not to flame out, but that doesnt appear to be working in our case!  Its like were saying to our fans, if you cant stand the heat, get out of the concert hall!  How about a little fire, scare, uh, audience!  Flame on!  Its too bad we dont play Fire on the Mountain!  Its like were having a fire sale, only the sale is our music and the fire is all too real!  Its a good thing weve never played Bay St. Louis, otherwise it would be Mississippi Burning!  Were telling the audience youre fired literally!  I really like that Denzel Washington movie, Man on Fire!  Ahh!  Ahh!  It burns, it burns!

Okay, Ive taken another look at it, and some might find that last paragraph a tad offensive.  And for that Im sorry.  Also for burning our fans and sending them to the hospital.  Thats definitely not cool, and its certainly not the Grooveasaurus Tex way.  GT is all about good times, good vibes and good tunes.  But somewhere along the line we lost sight of that, and in the end, thats probably the biggest tragedy.  So Im proud to announce a return to the Grooveasaurus Tex of old.  To celebrate, well be holding a conciliatory concert, or concili-ert, at the Fairgrove Amphitheater, to be followed by a fireworks display to thank our loyal fans.  See you there!

Jeremy Dezzo Mendes.

Salutations, Pine Oaks graduates and residents!

Why do I say graduates and residents?  Because its graduation time, of course!  Or at least it will be later this month.  You know graduation means a lot of things.  Friends, family, greeting cards with twenty dollar bills in them, on the assumption that this will pay for your college textbooks, and of course heavy drinking.  But one thing it also, sort of means, is prom time!  Thats right, in addition to graduation in four weeks, Rt. 237 will have its prom in one to one and a half weeks, depending on when this newsletter runs.  Perhaps it will even be half of a week, though I choose to stand by my original estimate of one to one and a half.

As you know, having read last months newsletter, the Rt. 237 seniors were in the midst of an important decision.  And Im proud to announce we have decided that decision!  Sort of.  We ended up with a tie between two potential prom themes, my own Wouldnt It Be Nice? and Monster Mash 2007.  So, in the spirit of compromise, the prom committee met in conjunction with the senior class officers, and we decided upon a combined theme, titled Wouldnt It Be A Nice Monster Mash 2007.  So in addition to my more beach- and Beach Boys-related prom theme, students will be encouraged to dress up as scary monsters who are also wearing Hawaiian shirts over their prom outfits.  Its true, there were some who suggested scrapping this idea in favor of the third place idea, We Fly High.  Thankfully, however, cooler heads prevailed, and I think we came up with a theme that will be enjoyable to all.

Sadly, this will also mean the end of my tenure as your intrepid Rt. 237 Fighting Spirit columnist.  Come the summer, I will be leaving the area for Missouri, where I will be attending Bulky College in the fall.  Im not sure who will pick up the slack for me; maybe the Junior Class President, Sandy Lellwiss-Budge.  If she is elected Senior Class President next year, then perhaps she can continue on.  In any event, I want to thank everyone, students and residents, for making writing this column such an enjoyable experience.  Ill remember each and every one of you that Ive met, which admittedly isnt very many people.
