Identification of a WRKY Transcription Factor Family Associated with Plant Innate Immunity Yi-Ren Chen | July 2002 UC Davis Plant Patholoy, Young Scholar's Program
Determination of the functional importance of molecules associated with the cascade reaction would facilitate the understanding of individual genes and of basic rice immunity pathways. Identified proteins would be optimal targets for engineering resistance on a molecular level. For instance, an inert chemical substance that reacts with the components of the immunity pathway may be sprayed on rice to activate immunity. Crops can also be engineered to have resistance upon demand. For example, bacterial blight is prevalent in hot and humid areas; plants can therefore be engineered to have the resistant pathway activated to a greater degree under these conditions. Furthermore, the signal transduction pathway is partially conserved in both animals and plants, extending the possible implications of this research to animal systems.ation.
