Learning Tai Ji

Perth, Western Australia

Though Tai Ji was traditionally ranked one of the highest forms of ancient martial arts in China, it is also known for its beneficial effects on health improvement. This light and graceful exercise, is believed to be able to calm the mind, clear toxin and rejuvenate the body, and suitable for the young and the old.

Tai Ji Fundamental Set

 The 37 Form

The first set is the fundamental and most important set, and students will be instructed on the Yang Style Tai Ji 37 Form, which was developed by the prolific Tai Ji expert, Cheng Man-Ch’ing who taught in Asia and in America (See Lineage of Tai Ji Masters and Instructors; For more information, please refer to Cheng, Man-ch'ing, and Robert W. Smith, 'T'ai Ji: The "Supreme Ultimate" Exercise for Health, Sport and Self-Defense.' Boston; Tokyo: Turtle Publishing, Turtle Martial Arts). It is believed that this form encapsulates the fluid essence of the Yang Style long form better than the 24 Form developed by the Chinese Sports Commission.

The practice of the whole set of the 37 Form for a student, who has completed learning, will take only about 5 to 10 minutes. It is an exercise that will not take too long to practice, but can afford positive health benefits.

The learning process, however, will take time and patience. Most students, who practice every day where possible or at least 3 times a week what they have learnt previously, should be able to grasp the basics of the 37 form quickly. Since the practice of parts of the whole set is also beneficial exercise, the student should do the parts as much as possible, till the movements are internalised and second nature.

Please note that learning steps of the set is one thing, mastery will take much longer. Just like one can learn to play tennis in several lessons, but mastery will take years. Traditionally, a dedicated Tai Ji disciple will take at least a year to master the basic form.

About the Instructor (2009)

Bay Joo-Hwa (Dr. Joo-Hwa BAY)

Dr. Bay is an Associate Professor in Architecture at the University of Western Australia and has his own design practice in Perth. He likes to conduct occasional Tai Ji classes for select small groups as a hobby, helping people try maintaining their health.

He has learnt Tai Ji from Lee Bar-Chwee since 1971 at the Sin Kwang Tai Ji Atheletic Association in Singapore (see Lineage of Tai Ji Masters and Instructors leading back many generations to the ancient originator of Tai Ji Chuan (Tai Ji Quan). The Tai Ji fundamental sets of exercises are slow and graceful, and maximize the circulations of inner Qi (energies) in the body, for optimizing strength and health. The art includes several sets of slow and faster movements and also includes sets using the Tai Ji sword, broad-sword (knife), and stick. Bay Joo-Hwa assisted Lee Bar-Chwee as one of the instructors in the teaching and conducting of practice sessions of Tai Ji exercises at various community centres when he was in Singapore. He has instructed several batches of students with group sizes ranging from 20 to 50 at different times. He has also served as a committee member of the association, and has performed and demonstrated the art on stage on many occasions.
